View Full Version : Cleaning questions, please help
I cleaned the 870 last night, and have a few questions::drowning:
1: Should I pass an oiled patch through the barrel, or leave it dry?
2: How can you get patches so thick, that there is some resistance, or do you wrap them around something?
3: Should I take Trigger Plate Assembly apart to clean EVER, and if so after how many rounds will it be necessary?
4: The manual says to clean the choke, I didn't receive one. Should I have? It is a Remington 870 Express
5: Which parts need to be oiled (like under the connector etc. in Glocks)?

3. umm...... not that I know.
Patches are made in 12ga size, get them at Walmart or a gunshop.
The manual has to cover all models of 870, a defense model won't have a choke usually.

1) I oil the bore on my shotgun because I do not store my 870 with a shell in the chamber, so I do not have to worry about the oil ruining my first shot.
2) I mainly use the cloth patches from Wal-Mart, they come big enough for 12 gauge use, but can be cut for smaller calibers. Or you can wrap smaller patches around an old 12 gauge brass brush.
3) Unless you know exactly how to take it apart and put it back together again I would not. Just spray the whole thing with a cleaner / solvent, let it sit for a few minutes, spray with a degreaser to clean it all out, then spray with some kind of lubricant / rust preventative (I use rem-oil). That has bept mine running fine for several thousand rounds.
4) Mr. Murphy answered this one.
5) Just a thin coat on everything to prevent rust should do it. Maybe some extra the action bars though.
