View Full Version : Barrel porting question
Ive wondered if porting a barrel on a handgun would effect or lower the ammos velocity? Sometimes I think it would lower it beacuse its letting out burnig gases before the bullet gets out but I also think that with handguns short barrel there is so much unburned gases anyway taht it wouldnt matter. Does anyone have any studies on this? The MagnaPort site say "no loss" but I would like some links if anyone could.

You will always lose a little but in most cases not a significant amount. The factory porting is typically 3% less for instance.
Thanks CGR. Thats what I was thinking. I would still like any links if posible. And if porting would be worth it on my G37.

Very good question...I am also wondering if porting my G-37 will help with faster follow up shots. I am concerned with how much it can really help with muzzle flip due to the nature of the round feeling more like a push straight back instead of the flipping action of say a .40 round.
Porting in some jobs do help in other it makes no difference
I just had a contender magana-ported and it feels no different than when it was not magana-port. So basically a $125.00 dollars or my money wasted.
Now on my other hand, I have a 12ga shotgun barrel magna-ported and it makes a world of difference.
i.e I can double-tap my semi-auto 12ga Benell M1s90 just as quick as a typical 45acp handgun ;)
Port will always decrease velocity but it's based on numerous items;
number of ports
distance and location
caliber
bbl length
etc....

Porting also increases the gas flash and the muzzle blast you hear.

NOT true with magna-port porting with the flash. To be quite truthfull and with shooting at night, flashy loads where no more flashly with their porting and was in reality less when compared to the non ported version.
I've used ported guns in 44mag/454casull and 12ga and they wheren't flashy by all means.
Also just something I noticed. On the Lone Wolf porting pictures, I see several same modle Glocks but the ports seem to be in a differant place on all of them. Does Lone Wolf just put them anyware? Or do they move them around for a differant "feel"? Im going to leave my G37 ALONE.

Good point the flash is still the same amount with a port or non ported gun as the gas is same amount.
The flash is really a mute point , but the blast more in your ear with a port.
speaking of blast I had my gun shot after porting by another person I stood next to the gun and near the muzzle about 6ft away. It was abrupt to say the least and I did back up to about 10ft or maybe 12 ;)
Cool thing is, it don't affect the shooter but only those around you and if you shoot at a range with no blast panels. So I will apologize now for anybody that I have pissed off and will pissed off with my 14" port 44magnum ;)
The fun is just beginning , I haven't really shot any hot loads nor I have I built any hot loads as of yet, but that will change in 2007 when I start slapping some stuff together. I'm also waiting to try the 357max out. A 180grain bullet going out of a mzl near 1700fps should create some serious blast and probably some other stuff like flames ;)

Yes the blast can be bad for bystanders. I have have sent guns to get Magna-ported for a few years and never gave any thought to side blast.
Well my brother bought a Raging Bull in .454 and we where shooting at a local range. I was standing off to the side and behind him talking to one of my customers who I haven't seen in a few years.
He (my big bro) touches one off and a piece of bullet frag hits me in the face and bounced off the inside of my glasses.
That was sure gets your attention guick.
