View Full Version : Cleaning question?
This might be a really stupid question.
Do you put solvent in the barrel when you clean it, with brush/jag/patches?
Glock manual never tells me specifically yes or no, just implications. Same with this write up -->http://www.f-r-i.com/glock/FAQ/FAQ-clean.htm
I'm a noob, and I really don’t know. Thanks.

Yes. using either a mop or a patch, soak them in your solvent and then run it down the barrel a couple times. Set the solvent soaked barrel aside and clean everything else, letting the solvent do the work for you. Then run a brush through 10-15 times; then dry patches until they come out clean. Then run a patch with lube, dry patch the excess out. You're done.
What I do with my glocks I put a stopper in bullet in and fill it full with hoppes #9 and let it set for 3-4 hours and then run a brush and patches thru it. and you can relaly tell the differece.

Did you improvise the stopper or is there one I can buy.

I've never used a stopper. Just solvent on a brush, then alternate dry and solvent soaked patches.
local Lowes has the rubber ones i think 19 cents each?
I see, thanks.
How do you guys get the patches through the barrel. Would OEM Cleaning Rod do the trick or is there a better after market product?

I use Dewey stainless rods. If I was going to buy new rods I think I would get the Tipton Carbon Fiber rods. If I want to soak the barrel with Hoppies #9 or Shooter Choice I use a tall Goya green olive jar. put the barrel in the jar, add marbles then pour in the solvent. after you let it soak, pour the solvent back into the solvent jar using a funnel and a coffee filter.

Just curious, why do you put marbles in the olive jar with your barrel and solvent?
Stopper? Just use an old ear plug. The tapered ones work great.

To take up space so you don't need as much solivent to cover the barrel. I like to do it this way because you don't have to try to get the barrel to stand up straight and not tip over or have the plug come out.
Thanks everyone, all of this helps, considering I'm a total noobie at this. How you guys get the patches through the barrel, effectively? Do you just push it through with a rod?
The factory cleaning rod has a slot in the end, just before the "nipple". It's for inserting patches.

That's what I figured, but wasn't sure. Thanks.

Have you ever thought about takeing a NRA Gun Course?
Possibly, if it will be worth it. What does it include. Or do you have a link. I don’t mind reading.

I'm going to clean my Glock tomorrow. I have last second questions about cleaning the frame.
from --> http://www.f-r-i.com/glock/FAQ/FAQ-clean.htm
Using a rag, lightly dampened with solvent, wipe the inside of the receiver. Important areas to wipe are the locking block, ejector, connector and cruciform.
Q1: I bought Hoppe's 9 solvent. Does the solvent damage the polymer frame in anyway?
Q2: Which part is cruciform?
And maybe some input on how you clean the frame.
Thank again.

I did my first clean and lube. It was pretty painless. I guess the only thing that gave me trouble was the breach face. There was some hard gunk in a half-circle shape. It was kind of hard to get rid of, but I did it. And in the same area, behind the extractor claw was kind of hard, but it's clean now.
