I just noticed in a couple of different shops that the G19's they were selling have a bevel cut into the forward top of the barrel hood. Anybody see this or know why it has been done? When did Glock start doing this?

View Full Version : beveled barrel hood on new G19's kengps 12-01-2006, 18:37 I just noticed in a couple of different shops that the G19's they were selling have a bevel cut into the forward top of the barrel hood. Anybody see this or know why it has been done? When did Glock start doing this? eprn 12-01-2006, 22:31 As I understand it, it was done to address the "phase 3" stoppages that the NYPD was having with their G19s. These were caused by a spent case being stuck horizontally in the ejection port of the weapon resulting in a failure that could not be cleared. There's a photo of one on the Gun Zone web site. The bevel's been around for a year or two. I've never seen one of these stoppages in person, either--with either an older or newer (post-bevel) G19. kengps 12-01-2006, 23:21 Just found out that the mods for the stage 3 problem includes a redesigned barrel lug also. A new design magazine must also be used to prevent JHP ammo from hanging up on the bottom of the feed ramp due to the barrel not dropping down as far as the older guns. The new magazines present the ammo at a higher position. eprn 12-03-2006, 20:41 That's good to know. Thanks! Steve in Az 12-05-2006, 15:06 FWIW, for those who will wonder about older magazine compatability: I tried my new Glock 19 with a pair of 14 year old NFML Glock 17 magazines. She ran perfect. Dandapani 12-05-2006, 15:21 The new barrel designs in G-19s have the "1" stamped on them... kengps 12-05-2006, 16:28 Originally posted by Steve in Az FWIW, for those who will wonder about older magazine compatability: I tried my new Glock 19 with a pair of 14 year old NFML Glock 17 magazines. She ran perfect. For all practical matters the G19 was perfect before the new mods. I read that NYPD experienced a Phase 3 stoppage every 450,000 rounds. BrokenArrow 12-09-2006, 02:38 NYPD must shoot a lot then, since it happened over 130 times, including twice during actual shootouts. :) I have two G19s and I don't worry about it; whatever that Gremlin was, it seems to have come and gone. Kinda like the Beretta/M9 slide failures. At one time 12 of 12 slides tested all broke under 35,000 rounds. In regular testing since at least 1998, M9 slides are averaging over 75,000 rounds w M882 NATO ammo. Stuff happens. And then it stops. ;) thurn55 12-09-2006, 18:38 I had two FTFs yesterday @ the range with my G19 (with '1' on barrel). Both occasions were with Wolf 115gr FMJ. Both times, the casing would get stuck horizontally too. I think it is because of limp wristing since it was my first time shooting with gloves in single digit weather... burr. Only shot 40rds and the first mag was my problem one. Everything fed perfect after that. I have posted a thread on here about my recoil spring not being parallel to the barrel after I field strip after I got back from the range, is this normal? Seems the recoil spring/rod is loose when I do place it parallel to the barrel where it normally goes. Back of the rod '5593' has some scrathes in it too, normal? I would only use that ammo in comm bloc weapons. thurn55 12-10-2006, 16:12 Wolf isn't my only practice round. I use Remington/UMC, Black Hills, and WWB as my normal range rounds. I just happened to be using Wolf, last range visit, since I'm trying to use up 250rds I bought a year ago. P7Guru 08-06-2007, 23:25 So, how can you tell old G19 mags from the ones designed to work with the new G19? S. Kelly 08-19-2007, 23:16 My newest G19 (2004-5 manufacture)seems to like the FML mags with #5 followers the best. The mags with #4 are OK, but the #5s are 100%. I don't even use the older mags. My Gold Dots just slam into the edge of the ramp if I do. LSP972 08-20-2007, 19:06 Originally posted by BrokenArrow NYPD must shoot a lot then, since it happened over 130 times, including twice during actual shootouts. :) But did it happen to anyone ELSE??? I cannot recall hearing of it. I fired 80 rounds through a brand-new (L prefix) G-19 a few weeks ago, prior to sending it off to David Bowie for his Signature job. Blissfully unaware of these changes, I shot the pistol with 15 year-old+ magazines; the followers are marked "9mm1" and were purchased in 1992. I've changed the springs once, perhaps five years ago or so. 30 (two magazines' worth) of these 80 rounds were Gold Dot 147gr hollow points, which is our issue duty cartridge. The G-19 did what Glocks do best; ran without a burp. Looking at the magazines that came with the new pistol (the followers are marked "6."),I can see a distinct difference in the shape and positioning of the followers. But the pistol didn't seem to care. NYPD has 30K+ cops. Assuming they only fire 50 rounds annually (I would think more?), that's a million and a half rounds of just pistol qual ammo. Ya know, I've been working on police firing ranges pretty steadily since 1987. Seen a LOT of Glocks on the line, and I've yet to see one do this so-called Phase Three thing. In fact, I've seen exactly two go down to anything but shooter-induced malfunction or bad ammunition; one broken trigger spring, and one broken slide lock spring. So you'll excuse my cynicism...;) . About the recoil rod, that's perfectly normal. When reassembling the gun, the key is that the recoil rod fit into the half-moon recess near the barrel lug. As for your frequent jams, I would agree with the other poster, try something other than Wolf. gman67 vBulletin® v3.7.3, Copyright ©2000-2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd. | ![]() |
