I am shooting a G34 in USPSA Limited class and I would like to add a magwell. I have been looking at the various models available from different sites, but I was wondering if the Dawson is worth the extra cost. I am interested in the 5.5 ounce model. Any suggestions and overall pros and cons about the unit itself are grealy appreciated.
:tequila:
I just put one on a G17 for GSSF unlimited and intend on using it for USPSA Open. I sent an email to DP yesterday asking them what mag extentions work but as of today have not received a reply. To be honest I love the heavy ice mag well ... the mags just flew in when I was dryfiring!

Heavy ICE magwell is a sweet deal. Any reason you are shooting Limited minor over just shooting Production?
Didn't try the Dawson on my personal gun (modded G24), but I did like the THE Accessories brass one.

Give the shop a call and ask for Paul if you don't get a reply soon. They are usually tied up answering the phones and getting orders filled...not much time for email. A phone call will get you the answer faster.

Because I like shooting in the limited class as far as magazine capacity is concerned. I am aware of the points spread situation that I have put my self in by shooting minor over major, but I am pretty new to this whole thing and am still just having fun with it. It also forces me to slow down and make sure I hit my targets(A's).
I have heard some people complain about the initial fitting of the ICE magwell. Have you found this to be true? I really do not want to start modifing the frame of my glock.
Thanks for all the input so far.
Another guy in my shop bought the Dawson magwell and had a few issues with it. Main thing I remember was the plug that fit up inside the backstrap seemed to bulge the rear of the magazine housing of the frame a bit making mags stick going in or out. This was solved with a liberal (I hate that word) bit of filing. Also, the one he chose was the lighter weight model, which did not suit me, and was a factor in my choosing of the THE Accessories brass magwell. To date, I have no expierence with the heavier Dawson magwell (is there one?).
Luck to you, and enjoy the sport.

Believe it or not there is actually three to choose from. A 2.9oz, 5.5oz, and a 6.7 oz model. I am intersted in the 5.5oz one.
I have the 5.5 oz one. No mods of any kind needed w/ my G17. The brass plug fit snug and so did the well itself. Mags just fly in and out w/ mine and I tried all 6 mags noticing no difference between them. They are standard hi cap OEM mags. I also have a STI open race gun and the G17 sucks up the mags w/ the Ice well on it more so than the STI.

In their new catalog they have an extra heavy ice for glocks, with a brass plug and brass magwell.
Anyone tried this one yet?

I shoot a 34 in Limited and ltd10 as well. I decided on the Dawson because of the replacable insert. You'd be suprised how beat up the magwell can get. You CAN be competitive with a 9mm in the Ltd classes. At the nationals, no. At the club level, yes. I can't afford the nationals. If you reload it's even better. 126PF has a very flat recoil. I don't so I'm stuck with 131pf. But I can stick 24 rounds in the gun.
It's not that it takes fitting to install, it just takes the right technique to install it. The problem lies in the lack of instructions. If you get one, PM me and I'll save you some time on install. I did have to relieve a little bit of the forward, inside surface of the mag well a little. The magwell fits so snug that it put the squeeze on the frame. Mags wouldn't drop free. It didn't take much to solve, and it's worth it as you don't want the mag well coming off or loose.
I have 5.5 as well, I think. Brass insert, Aluminum funnel.
I have one on a 34, I have reduced the brass insert a little bit but the mags still hang up occasionally when they drop. I am planning on switching it to my 35, so I am going to fit it to that instead of to the 34.
Fit the magwell to the gun, not the gun to the magwell!
Aside from that, it is a great magwell. It fits in the IDPA box, and if you use standard magazines it is IDPA legal. Just make sure your mags are fully seated, the bottom of a standard baseplate is flush with the bottom of the magwell.
Although it is fast to insert mags with, it is a handicap in IDPA when doing a tactical reload. Most of the time that can be overcome by doing a RWR instead though, just something to think about.

and it's great. It really calms down my G22. I did have to dremmel the brass plug until it fit. This was a pain and Dawson should correct the problem. Regardless, it's a great mag well. I use Glockmeister delrin mag bases and they work well with this magwell.

Have any of you tried the Dawson mag extensions? I was thinking they would work great with the ICE magwell. It seems like they hold +6 of 9mm which is the most of any of the other mag extensions I have seen on the market. I was wondering if they would slip off accidently because of the way they attach.

I have one Dawson and two arredondo's. The Dawson is great, adds weight to mags. In can fit 23 total, but it's REAL tight. I little mod work the follower frees it up a little.
No issues of it coming off yet.
I just added the Ice Magwell to my G22. I to had trouble getting the brass insert into the grip. I didn't go any filing on it. I only have to tap it in the last 1/8 inch. I have not had any problems with the mags hanging up yet. I also use the Dawson mag extensions and they work perfect with the magwell. They are made of aluminum and require no tools to take them off so you can clean your mag. I got the mag extensions at www.shootersconnection.com

For those that use an Arrendondo pad, you may have to trim the outer edge of the base pad so that you can seat the mags cleanly when using a Dawson's magwell.

Has anyone had either of the two heavy magwells on for a long period of time? I was wondering if the screw going thru the hole in the Glock grip moved around over time causing the hole to stretch or enlarge and causing the magwell to loosen up.

I have been testing one for awhile on my own guns and I like it. I now have them in stock as well.

I've got the ICE Heavy installed on my G35. Didn't have any problems with the funnel fitting, but the plug took a bit of work to get the screw in line with the hole in the grip. I love the balance it gives the gun. I went with the Dawson for two reasons... I was looking for something that heavy (brass) but not shiny (brass). The black slide and the black magwell frame the OD pistol frame very well. Second reason was that I'd handled other guns with Dawson magwells (as well as other parts) and was impressed with the quality. I also went with the Taylor Freelance +0 "Drop Away Floorplates". Also adding a little overall weight and the mags drop like rocks! Some pics below!

I wasn't sure about the OD either. A good friend of mine won this one in a post GSSF match drawing! He ordered it in green, but for some reason wasn't sure if that's what'd be showing up or not. When we went to the dealer who recieved it to do the transfer we opened the case not knowing for sure what color would be inside.
I'm really happy with the green, I think it makes it very distinctive. My only issue now is that I want to put Eric W's "TruGrip" tape on, but it only comes in black and I don't want to cover up the green!

I like how the Ice fits snugly at the front and base of the grip. I'm having issues with a brass magwell and a gap at the front strap that is a humdinger for pinching the little finger. I also like the black look.
CGR: Went to the website to price a magwell from you but the online store seems TU.
What's the price on the heavy?

I've used Dawson extensions and Arredondo extensions without a problem on my wife's G35 Limited gun with the heavy ICE. It will also work with Glock +2 extensions.
Mine also fit perfectly. The last thing you'd want is Dawson to "fix" anything. Much better for the brass plug to be trimmed for a perfect fit than loose (like it would be in my gun if Dawson sized it for RCKnight's gun).
