View Full Version : 870 Marine Magnum questions
Hello all,
I am currently looking into getting an Remington 870 marine magnum and I had a couple questions.
1) Is the Marine Magnum comparable parts /quality wise to the Wingmaster or Police models, or is it just an express with a nickel finish?
2) Specifically, does the Marine Magnum have the metal, non J-lock trigger guard like the Police and Wingmaster models or does it have the plastic J-lock type of the express?
Searching didn't get me the specific answers I was looking for so I would really appreciate any information you folks could share.
Thanks.
The MM is police parts, not a nickel plated Express.

The Marine Magnum has a plastic trigger guard, just like the Express. It also has the 'J' cutout safety, but the safety is metal. You'll probably want to replace the safety with an oversize one from Wilson Combat or some other after market part. It's very easy to do.
I had a Marine Magnum for a while, but it didn't float my boat, so I traded it in for a Nova H2O. I'm just a Benelli guy.

Get an 870P, from the Remington Law Enforcement catalog, with the 18" barrel and ghost-ring sights option.
Perfect for self-defense, right from the box, just add ammo (preferably Federal 00 buck with the new Flite COntrol wad).
You will not be sorry.

How much do the 870P's run? Can a lowly civilian like me just order one?

I'm not a LEO, just a regular civilian, and I just picked up an 870 Police model, 20", parkerized for a little over $4 bills, with taxes, etc., from a local dealer. Waiting til after X-mas to shoot, so I can't speak personally about its shooting characteristics, but everyone I asked and their brother-in-law recommended the 870 P over any other pump.
Anyone can buy a police model. Worth the extra money if you plan on doing more than just light shooting.
Thanks everyone for the info.

I think that the MarMag falls between the express and the police models overall. It does have the plastic trigger guard and stupid j-lock, however it does not have the crappy finish that the expresses do.
I like mine, as do most who I know that have them, however if you are still considering one (I agree that an 870P is a great option), I would wait for the 870 MarMag XCS that is coming out early next year.

When did Remington start the J-lock? I've got an 870 Express Mag in Walnut back at home in Texas and it doesn't have one. I would make a guess that it was purchased around 2001. I also have an 870 Express Mag Synthetic that doesn't have it that Remington dated to 1998.

It's a safety with a J shaped keyhole that will lock it in the 'safe' position.
