View Full Version : Do you scare other shooters?

Every time I go to the range there is at least one person who comments on the noise of my G33. I have recently started shooting IDPA locally and of those guys six or eight guys have come up to me and asked what I was shooting. Most of the comments are something like "Jesus, what is that bazooka?"

Anyone else experience this??

It's a bit off topic for the 357 club, but I scared the hell out of a State Trooper on the firing range when I borrowed my uncle's Wildey for a session at the outdoor range.

Trooper was the only other person on the range and was practicing with his Baretta. Nodded at him as I passed and went about 5 stations down. Unpacked everything set up a target and commenced having fun. All you heard was his shots, pop pop pop pop then BABOOM. He stopped immediately and came trotting down to see what just made that pumpkin sized ball of flame. We chatted about it for awhile, and I let him squeeze off a few. He commented on how moderate the recoil was compared to the S&W Model 29 he had at home.

Shortly after our conversation, he left, without firing another shot from the Baretta. I think he was feeling a bit intimidated.

I would not say scare, but intimidate.

With 90 or 88 grn max loads with aa9 or blue dot, the boom is deafining even with phones. My 229 sport will draw dust from the rafters if I double tap a few. Normally I clear back a few shooters with these loads. And if they are still around, I bring out the 6" comped g20 with hot 10mm's and that will almost always get me a free bench or two.

I went to a local range over the weekend and fired 100 rounds in my 32. When we got to the range nearly every lane was full, so I chose an empty one on the end. After the first 50 rounds, nearly everyone was gone. Dunno if I scared them out with all the BOOMing going on or what. There was a lady in the lane right next to me shooting a .22 target pistol. After a few of my clips she left and her hubby came over to see what I was shooting. ;f

Man I love the 357Sig!!!

{My 229 sport will draw dust from the rafters if I double tap a few}

Something a little bit off subject;

I whent out with a friend of mine in Orlando to help break in his G31C and after we fired about 5 shots the over head Florescent light fell out of the holder ( and NO we didn't shoot it ) and 3 seconds later one of the holder cables/strap let go. The light was about 4 ft ahead of us in the adjacent lane and we think the blast and sound percussion loosen the light and it fell. For a second I thought the roof was falling in and everybody on the left side us all seized firing for a few seconds.

"Would you believe the range want us to pay for this?"

and;

I whent shooting at a gun range in Hialeah and while my friend was firing my G20 off a guy had just came in with his wife and kids. They had eyes and ears on , he did not.

If I could have had a camera " a picture would say 1000 words" as to how he looked "holding his ears" and the looks on his Kids faces.

I notice they didn't stay to long.

I still think the loudest gun that I had been next to was a colt phyton that my Uncle fired off outside when I had my fingers in my ears as a kid. The next few rounds he fired, I was standing about 50ft away and "yes I was scared". Our dog also ran away and not seen or heard from for the next 4 hours.

My G32C usually gets me some looks when I touch off the first round. Occasionally somebody will ask me what that thing is that is making all that noise. That is nothing compared to what happened Saturday! I shot a Taurus 650 in .357 Mag with full power 110 gr JHP. The muzzle flare was incredible. Recoil was stout and my hand actually hurts today. People on either side of me immediately stopped firing and stepped back (even though the stalls in the range were separated by thick plexiglass barriers).

It's really neat to shoot these things (.357 Sigs or mags) on an empty indoor range. You can very clearly hear the armor plates ringing after each shot - even through 31 NRR muffs.

I experience this phenomenon with my 32 at indoor ranges. Last time I shot at one my buddy had his Blackhawk in 30 carbine. Also very attention getting!

I almost always get interest in the 32 when I shoot it. I got to the range one friday morning and there were 2 KCPD tac-teams drilling. After giving them 30 minutes to finish the team leader saw my equipment and Fobus holster. The team leader asked about my law enforcement experience then about the 32. I had about 500 round with me. The entire tac group ended up shooting the pistol before they left. Two officers said they were going to get barrels for their 23's to swap. Then the tac leader gave me all the .40 brass (about 1000 rounds) for my trouble.

OH, and Noway, I used to live in Hialeah and I know the range you're talking about. I can imagine the look on their faces, especially with the size of that range. Are they still shootin up at Markham Park on Thursday nights? Man I miss those days!!

I have seen a few shooters back away or go down a few stalls when I let off a few double taps of Corbon 10MM. Some will ask what in the H*ll am I shooting and I just grin and say just a lil pocket rocket. They and I love the fireball at the tip of the barrel.:)

I have only fired my .357 Sig (P239) outdoors with nobody else around other than the friends I was shooting with. I do clearly remember two other indoor experiences, though.

My Desert Eagle .44 Magnums always attracted attention at the indoor range, and usually cleared it out. Finally traded both of them.

I went with a friend of mine to an indoor range and he brought along his Full-Auto. MAC-10 in .45 ACP with a suppressor. The suppressor did not really silence his particular ammo. There was a group of Security Guards in firearms training (first day) with their instructor at one end of the range. When we let loose with the MAC, a number of the trainees came over with their instructor. One of them asked the trainer if things like that were legal. He replied that they were (my friend had all of his NFA paperwork with us). The guy that asked then looked at the .38 SPL revolver he was training with, and asked his instructor "And this is all we are gonna' have to defend ourselves with?".

I look forward to joining your forum soon, as I certainly intend on adding .357 Sig Glocks to my collection, especially since I have a good supply of pre-ban .40 mags in all sizes (inlcuding some Scherer 29 rounders - 29 + 1 rounds of .357 Sig ;f )

03-05-2002, 10:26
Not so much from my Glock 31; mostly from my Desert Eagle .50!
At the indoor ranges, that thing really shakes the ground. One guy shooting a .22 rifle almost dropped the rifle when I fired that thing off. I let him shoot it; he shot one mag full and said he'd had enough! Can't imagine why...my .454 has a LOT more recoil ;f !

This board is full of sicko's....

I feel right at home.

I had an N-frame S&W 357 that I hand loaded for and nobody ever wanted to shoot it. I was shooting with my Dad one day and said lets shoot some hot loads. He pulled out his box of .44 mag factory JHP's and loads up his Super Blackhawk. I load up my hot homebrews in my 357 and let him get off a few rounds before I touched off a few. He came right out of his boots. That was always the reaction to my handloads. I love the blast and the kick, if I didn't want that then I would shoot my .22. I'm just getting back into shooting after many years of being too busy. I'm looking to buy my first Glock. Almost bought a G20 the other night but it sold just before I got there. In reality I think the best choice right now for me is the G32 with maybe an extra barrel in .40S&W. I'll be back asking for handload or factory ammo recommendations when I get my Glock.

probably a little off the subject but i was shooting my glock 27 on wednesday night after about fifty rounds i was taking a break and watching the guy next to me shooting a glock 30, a few mins after i went back to shooting i was about 5 rounds into my 9 rd mag and i hear KAAAAAAAAAAABOOOOOOOOOOOOM! and see about 2 feet of flame shoot out the divider to my left it scared the crap out of me i musta jumped about 5 feet to the right....i look back through the window and i see the gun shop owner that i know laughing his butt off at me pointing....and then i backed up to see the entire range of about 20 people walking down to see what the hell tha was.....guy had a .50 dessert eagle....he let me squeeze off a few with it.....man is that thing impressive! i think i must have one! ;)

>>i wnt a g20 10mm and never shot one but I do have a glock 357 with 40 barrel is the 10mm good or how diffrent compared to the 357sig.<<

That's hard to answer. I can tell you my experience as a 10mm nut that fell in love with the 357 Sig. I have a g22 and hated it until I put a BarSto 357 Sig barrel in it, and like wow! Just a drop in barrel in a stock g22, and I deemed it a target gun, at least by my standards. My guess is your a lot like me, if you get a g20 your gonna love it. It's like the 357 sig with more balls.

I like to shoot my G20, & 29, but the 32C really gets peoples attention. I do not think it jus teh volume, but kinda higher crack is very impressive. Near dusk the flames are impressive. However the holes at the other end are more impressive from the G20. Both are very accurate.

Didn't scare anyone but made a new friend. ;f

Took a day off and went to the range last week with my G33. At the point next to me was a guy and his girl who had just gotten her license. They were shooting a G26 and since she was about 5' I just couldn't help myself.....

I asked her boyfriend if she'd like to try my pistol. He smiled (he knew) and said suuuuuuuuuure. She squeezed off a shot and all I heard was her yell Holy $*it!

Almost couldn't get it back from her. She particularly liked the ball of flame at the muzzle!;G

Damn! just realized, I never have let anyone else fire my pistol before......

A very timely subject for me regarding the muzzle blast on the .357 round. We are due to take delivery in a few months on .357's in 229 Sig's. And the muzzle blast problem is a concern. We qualify Officers with muffs or ear plugs and then your involved in a shooting and your firing without protection. Will the "heat of the moment" cancel out the muzzle blast?

I was going to post this under a seperate topic but its relevant here.......What do the FI's and experienced shooters think?

Off subject......I was going on a big dollar hunting trip and was using a M-70 in .375 H&H. Days prior to leaving the firing pin spring gave light strikes so I changed it out with an enhanced power spring. I just HAD to make sure it worked but really had nowhere to shoot but in my basement. So I set up four feet of newspapers with some firewood behind it just in case. Touched off a .375 mag with 300 grain Swift A-Frames at 2550 fps. Blew out two light bulbs on the way to the target. My wife mentioned that about EVERYTHING upstairs shook.

The 229 is sweet, I wish I could afford one. As for the flash, I really can't say. I've only seen it at a darkened range when I let someone else fire my pistol. Otherwise, I seem to block it out, if that makes any sense. I was using CCI Blazers, maybe different ammo would perform differently?

I will tell you one thing, firing it without ear protection is painful with quick follow up shots. I only did it once outdoors at my Mom's place (10 acres against a hill) and I couldn't hear right until the next day. It IS a cannon! Recoil is surprising too, much like .45's (Colt Defender) I have owned.

I sure hope that more than one person in your department tested this round / pistol out before the order was placed. The range (as you know better than I do) is a lot different than a high stress situation.

Stay safe and THANK YOU for what you do. We'd be lost without you guys!

I have a G32 that I shoot at the range on rare occasion, I have noticed that it gets a whole lot of attention. Just the usual curious glances. But on the other hand, I have a Rossi .357 with a 4" barrel and flash compensator....that little sucker gets everyone's attention! Talk about a fireball! Followed by an equally big bang!
It's a revolver and also happens to be the first gun I've purchased. I'll never get rid of it, it's like my best friend and it has never let me down or mis-fired. I now have a full arsenal which includes a M1A1 Scout, Norinco AK, Preban Colt in 7.62 cal., and Colt 45 (compact) just to name a few. Next week I'm picking up a G23. My G32 is a "blast" to shoot but the ammo isn't cheap and I refuse to shoot junk ammo thru it.

A .375 H&H in a BASEMENT!?! Wow...
Did your "backstop" stop the bullet? I'm just asking because I plan on getting a Remington .375 Ultra Magnum soon, and would just like to have a fired bullet (I've got bullets from most of my handguns; I used magazines to stop 'em). Not sure what'll it take to stop one, though.

I don't think it scares other shooters. It sure makes them curious. Every time we take one of the 357 to the indoor range, we get a lot of questions. Outdoors people just don't notice them as much.

If you use slow burning powder like Vihtavouri N350 or Hodgdon’s LongShot with any IDPA/USPSA sanctioned caliber, while practicing at an indoor range you will most definitely get everyone’s attention. Been there done that have a closet full of T-Shirts…

Went shooting today with my buddy. He has a G30 and just bought a G26 that he wanted to break in. I took my G31 along and let him squeeze a few rounds out of it. He could not believe the sound from the .357 SIG round and was also shocked by the recoil compared to his G30. He thought the .45 would have a lot more punch compared to the .357 SIG.

At one of my early PPC matches in early summer 2000, the guy in the lane to my right just about jumped out of his boots. The range master laughed his ass off because he shot the target one lane down, AT 7 YARDS!!!

He said he thought my gun blew-up. He droped one round(target next to him), and didn't get off 3 more because he was so shook up.

That's what ya get when ya let guys shoot full power in a match that everyone else is using 700 f.p.s. .38 wadcutters. :)

On the subject of the 357 Sig and noise muzzle flash:
I recently attended John Farnum's DTI Advanced Handgun Course and I was impressed with this fact that he learned from Texas State Police: When they shoot a.357 sig round the noise makes everyone run. They compare it to a rifle being fired, the non-combatants flee. Combine this with Ayoob's account of the "lightening bolt effect" on stopping power from the same folks, I think the .357 Sig is a "keeper".

Absolutely. I have a magnaported Python, and it will run anything without muffs off. The .44 mag hunters are scared of my python. I generally carry my python, glock 22/23, a long rifle or so (mini-14, hk91, M700 30-06, sks, ect) and afew hundred rounds for each. Haha G. :)

Here's one for you. Yes I am asking a biased question (given the venue), but I am going to ask it here anyway. A G31 and a G20 are both on my list to get. The question is which to get first? I *like* the 20; it feels good in my hand. Same is true for the G31. The possible plus to the 31 is that I have my mags from the G22 that I got rid of (non Klinton mags) so there is no added expense for real mags. Also, no need for new leather.

What are everybody's thoughts? 357SIG ammo (through GA Arms) is a bit cheaper than the same 10mm ammo.

i did that to a Local city cop at the range one day. he was there shooting with his 9mm Beretta. i was about 4 lanes down from him and we went downrange to the 7 yd. line and popped off a few. i figured id let him shoot first cuz i myself wanted to compare noise. so, he unloaded 15 9mm's. i looked over at him and nodded my head as he was reloading. i let 10 rounds go out of my G31 and it scared him so bad he dropped his second clip! i couldnt help but laugh at him. but he non-chalantly picked up his clip, walked over to me and i think his exact words were, "jesus *****.....what the **** is that, a god **** .50 cal. Browning???!!!!"
so, we got to talking about it and he said he was leaving the range and going to the gun shop to buy one of his own!! lol

I don't know what they think ;) but over the years there has been a lot who say that the rush of the moment closes the ears to the shock. Adrenaline and all that.

I love the 357 Sig round from my 239 so much, I just picked up a 229 in 40 and will be getting the barrel for it. I really want to try a 357SIG barrel in my G35 to see how the accuracy improves that gun too.

Great cartridge, SOs hate it in IDPA and those on the range next to me just get that sly smile on their faces.

Oh yeah!!! I shoot steel from a covered firing point at 25 yds at an outdoor range. The cover is tin. If it is crowded, I break out the .357. It gets uncrowded real quick. Seems earplugs just aren't enough. "Daddy, my ears hurt." Evil!!!

Just a quick question....I've been looking into getting a .357 SIG for awhile now, the round puts up some sillypowerful numbers that make it pretty desirable . Has anyone fired one of these things indoors w/o hearing protection? The reason I ask is because that is the likely self-defense scenario, and it seems like the 357 is probably the loudest semi-auto round out there, but it is so loud that'll permanently damage one's hearing?? I've fired literally thousands of 5.56, 7.62, and 9mm w/o earplugs, and no real lasting effects, is the 357 as loud as its characterized here?

03-06-2004, 19:22
c5637,

IMHO, my G32 is damn near as loud as my 30.06, if not equal. When I go up to my property in the woods, there are always little birds singing and squirrels frolicking in the trees. 1st round goes off;P, and the only sound is the leaves in the trees, swayin' in the breeze. Dadgum crows won't even come back!;f

03-10-2004, 00:08
Yeah, I thought my G31 was loud until some crazy guy showed up. A 440 marlin pistol. No, I am not making this up. Rounds were loaded into the breach and it was closed like a dial. It reminded me of an artilery piece. It sounded like one to. A loud crack may turn heads. The BOOM that came from this shaked them. I could not shoot straight out of anticipation for their next shot. No, I did not even want to shoot it.

Me and a friend (has a Glock 23) went to an indoor range the other day for the first time.

The other shooters were startled and were asking what the hell I was shooting. Also, the concussion from my XD .357 knocked my friend's box of ammo off of the tray and down into the downrange area. ;P :)

I don't know about you fellows but as I push into the later years (OK - over 40 - not exactly old yet) - my hearing is gradually decreasing. I had a G22 with a conversion sig barrel and loved it - accurate as all get out - but I had to part with it because I felt the noise was damaging my hearing. For what it is worth - if the round is going to blow your eardrums away it aint worth it in my book. Heck, even .45 supers out of a G30 don't bother my ears as much as the sigs did (more of a boom than a crack).

Last week I was shooting my G33 at my local range. A guy next to me had a G26. He was new to Glocks and never saw one in 357. He thought I had the same gun as him, at least until I fired it. I think the G33 is one of Glocks best guns. Its my second favorite, just below the G29.

Took my new G33 to the range today; first day out with it... for some reason, it does seem louder than my Sig 2340 (also in .357 Sig)... defintely did get some looks! I guess they weren't all wearing earplugs *under* their muffs, like I was...

dao, definitely a commanding report, with earplugs on it does not bother me, but always get the atttention of people around you. I have Cor-Bons and Gold Dots for carry. My friends does not enjoy shooting it though. squadman
