Howdie all-
I'm gonna be in the market for a 9mm again. I had a P99 and traded it (kicking myself for it)
I picked up a G19 a while ago and I just cannot get used to it. It just won't shoot for me the way I want it to. I know I know, yada yada trigger control, its not the gun, its you- the shooter...blah blah....Well I shoot my G21 e-x-c-e-llently....so I don't think its trigger control.
I guess what I'm really getting at is, how reliable is the P99 as compared to a Glock?
I'm looking for simplicity and durability- I should have got to know my first p99 better before I traded it.
How hard are parts to get for it?
extractors and recoil guides and such?
Oh- on another note, I have a SS spare guide rod for my G19- will they swap with a P99?
if so, that'd be just dandy

IMHO, the P99 is what a Glock wants to be when it grows up! Definitely go a head and give the Walther a second chance. You won,t regret it in the least. The ergonomics of the P99 are great. The pistol will comfortably fit just about anyones hands by swapping out the back-strap. Accuracy of the Walther is very good. Parts are plentiful and easy to obtain. One can go through Earl's or Walther America for spares. Also, there are plenty of good holster options out there for the P99 (used to be a slight issue in the past). Give serious consideration to the AS pistol. It is the traditional DA/SA model.

FWIW:

Lets see now.. You had a P99 but for whatever reason traded it away. You bought a Glock and now you aren't happy with that either.

Why do you think you would be any more satisfied with a Walther P99 the 2nd time around?

Lots of folks own Glocks and apparently quite satisfied with them. A much smaller percentage of American gun owners have Walther P99's and from all I read (and personal experience) love 'em. You didn't care for either?

I would suggest you try another manufacturer.. If you buy a Sig, CZ, H&K or someother respectible brand and you don't like THAT firearm, might I respectfully suggest you simply might be one of those folks who cannot be pleased.

Now that I've thoroughly pissed you off, a parting suggestion..

If enough people say nice things about the Walther P99 and you DO decide to go for round two, I suggest you buy a P99 with the AS trigger. If you don't like a P99 with the AS trigger you might want to ease over to the revolver forum and start over again with wheelies..

actually- I sold the first p99 due to money troubles- not all of us have an endless supply of funds to have all the guns we wish at once. I know its a crazy idea, but it happens sometimes.

OK...

Valid reason.

I've had my zoloft and fiber now, sorry I was a butt..

FWIW: I do think my recently acquired P99c/AS is without a doubt,as a package, the finest overall pistol I've ever owned.. The AS tigger is fantastic... Getcha one!

actually I traded my P99 for a glock 17 haha I just wanted to mess back with you because you were quite successful in pissin me off....anywho, I fell victim to the "gotta have glock in 9mm" mentality. I ended up giving the G17 to my brother b/c I'm a nice guy haha. Then I got the G19- and was better off throwing the bullets with both Glock 9mm's.
I'm considering Walther and Sig for a 9mm. I shoot both rather well- but part availability and "can I do work to it myself" makes me weary.
Now I'm starting to realize that the chances of actually having to work on the gun is minimal- I just like tinkering- and glocks are easy to tinker with. I just have to learn to keep my damn hands off the internals. If it isn't broke, Don't fix it.

But back to your gun- did you have any trouble getting used to the SA/DA trigger? It looks like a real tack driver.

Stony:

Yikes... You hosed the old guy.

Oh well, better to have apologized unnecessarily than not to have apologized when it was needed..

Back to the subject:

I have owned a Sig P239 for over ten years. It has always been 100% reliable and very accurate. Keep in mind for me accuracy is critical at that distance between 0-7 yards which I consider self defense distance.

Until I shot my Walther P99c/AS I had never owned a pistol as accurate as the Sig P239. Recently I shot the Sig & Walther "head to head" and the Sig is slightly more accurate, only because it has Crimson Trace Lasergrips on it.

Unless you've had the opportunity to shoot a good firearm with lasergrips you just can't imagine the potential difference in accuracy they provide.

Anyway, I consider the Walther P99c/AS as a fantastic pistol.. If you are worried about warranty then find yourself a Smith & Wesson SW99. The SW99 is virtually the same pistol, but some portion is American made, while the Walther P99 is all German made. The Walther only has a one year warranty. The S&W SW99 has a lifetime warranty, and S&W has a great Customer Service Dept.

I just don't get too excited about warranty length as over my 50+ years of firearms ownership I've never had a firearm fail after the one year warranty period. I think like most things if a product has a problem from the factory it will probably show up before a year passes.

I DID have a 1st Beretta Tomcat, a first series Taurus PT22, and a first serices Charter Arms "Pathfinder" fail, but always within the warranty period. I try and never buy a first series anything anymore, as sometimes bugs appear in those..

I intend to harrass Crimson Trace (hear me Joe?) for a set of CT Lasergrips for my fine P99c, but truthfully I don't see it happening. They just started making Lasergrips for the Sig P239 last year. If they do make CT's for the P99 Lord willin' I'll have a set.

Well, my computer time is up. We are only allowed 30 mins twice a week and guess I'm out of time until next week.. The guard is here to escort me back to my cell block, and he hates to wait... Being in the C-wing "snitch wing" sucks, but it beats being some guys wife in Cell Block B or D. (A is Max).

Take care, and don't drop your soap in the shower~

J. Pomeroy

YIKES!
I know you prob won't be a fan of it, but Viridian started making a green laser for the P22's- soon to be out for the Glocks and P99s as well. I dunno if you want a grip laser or a mounted one, but the viridians are looking pretty juicy.

Stony:

I'll check Viridian out, but from what I've read about the color spectrum regarding lasers the green laser takes considerable more battery power, and battery life will be a problem.

I read someplace where the next generation of lasers will probably be a blue color, but I could be wrong.

I'm extremely happy with my two Crimson Trace lasergrips and in interacting with the CT folks on www.crimsontrace.com I'd always chose CT first, but if another company made a laser for a firearm I own, and CT didn't, I would certainly Check them out.

I also have a CAT (of Argentina) Laser for my Bersa Thunder 9/UC. It works real well, and is model specific, but battery life compared to the CT's is quite limited.

Armalaser makes a laser for my KelTec's but I don't know a lot about them.

I think CT and LaserMax are the two "Alpha Males" in the laser business. Both make quality lasers and you can't go wrong with either one. It is interesting that LaserMax who has always touted the "guide rod/replacement laser is now coming out with a new design similiar to the CT's. It'll be in addition to the guide rod version.

Lots of folks still don't appreciate lasers in general, but my vision is declining and my hands aren't too steady anymore so I need all the help with accuracy I can get.

Crimson Trace Lasergrips work for me.

I DO hope to get a Walther P22 sooner or later. I love plinking, and the laser on the Walther will enable me to enjoy it more, and possibly even hit the target now and then.

Best Wishes,

J. Pomeroy:thumbsup:

actually i decided on a Sig 226 just so I can get the laser grips.
I don't want to wait around for CT to produce a laser set up for the Walther P99.
