View Full Version : 2nd range trip with piece of junk 870!
:steamed:
Luckily I was at the range, and not facing someone that wanted to end my life.
The 870 was shooting well for a while, with none of the previous stoppages.
(I must admit that we were beginning to enjoy shooting this serious firearm)
But then I noticed that the shell carrier had gone all floppy, and there were bits inside that were loose. I pulled a piece that looked like it belonged to the trigger plate assembly out.
I think it is a piece called a "carrier dog".
Completely sheared!
Took it straight back to where it was purchased. Lots of wasted time, and lots of driving.
Either Remmington HAS dropped their level of quality, or it's my fault for not listening to most of you, and not purchasing the police model.
For me, it sucks big time though, Cos a Glock is a Glock is a Glock.

As others are repeatedly told, the Express is an economy offering, and all that goes with it. Even still, yours is an exception rather than norm.
If you posted it, I don't recall: Was this a Walmart gun?
If you thought that you needed the Police model, you've now experienced the consequence of "good-as" thinking.
Remington will take care of you.

Your experience, even with an Express gun, is unusual.
I had an 870 Express 18" myself, and shot several thousand rounds through it without a single hiccup, sold it to a friend who needed a 12ga in a bit of a hurry, and who proceeded to shoot several thousand MORE rounds through it hiccupless before I moved away.... and it wasn't an unusual Express. Nothing done to it but standard cleaning (never even removed the bolt, just cleaned through the action).

I suspect that whatever failed was busted all along, hence the hard cycing, or else it was busted by the hard-cycling made necesary by the original parts failure.
Either way, sounds like something was not right, right from the factory floor.
That is VERY dissappointing, as there is no question that the Remington 870 is inherently a very rugged, reliable design. There is a reason that it is widely viewed as the 4x4 of shotguns.
But any design, no matter how good, can be messed up by bad QC!
Unfortunately, I've heard more complaints about Remington quality issues in the last 2 years than I had in the previous 30. Something must be going on there, and it doesn't sound good.
I'd REALLY hate to see Remington go south as a quality maker!
(But this makes me doubly glad that I bought my 870P and 11-87 POLICE out of the Remington Law Enforcement line....)

The parts you mentioned (carrier and carrier dog ) in my
870 Express are made of steel and seem more than sturdy
enough to perform their function.
Are you assuming Remington makes these parts "better" in
the wingmaster and LE guns?
While there ARE a couple of parts made differently,
I think you just got a Lemon.

Definitely an unusual problem.
Back from the shop's gunsmith, it performed flawlessly. I suppose it deserves another chance.
However, if it ever fails again, it will be returned to Remington.

Buy a Saiga-12, the most reliable shotgun in the world.

Other than wanting the bird in hand, why not return the gun to the manufacturer so they can identify the issue, perhaps identify a trend and/or make corrections, and then make right with you directly?
