View Full Version : "The Beast" (video of NEF 12ga. SBS)
Recently, I was sitting around the shop, bored, when I got to thinking. There was an NEF 12ga., single-shot shotgun sitting on the shelf, and an Advanced Technology AR-style collapsable stock set in the store.
Well, you take those elements, add in a machine shop, an FFl and SOT, and my twisted mind, and you end up with a dangerous mixture.
I sawed the barrel of the NEF down to 10.25" and filed an ATF Form 2, registering it as a Short-barreled shotgun. (The first example was traded to a local Type 01/Class 3, for another NEF and $125 cash. So, I used the cash to pick up another stock set, and built the second NEF into a duplicate of the first. (I get bored easily.)
By now, the two of them have had close to 100 rounds put through them. Everything from Aguila mini-shells, to Remington 3" Magnum slugs. Today, however, we were able to capture the firing on video, and posted it online.
So, here it is:

My brother has a little single shot NEF with a 16" rifled barrel. That thing just plain hurts. It has a 3" chamber but no one is brave enough to try a 3" mag out of it from the shoulder. I could only imagine the recoil from that tiny thing.
Volume was kind of loud, not much else going for the video.

It's probably as tactical as I can go here in Australia. Pump action a semies are not allowed.
It is a BREDA (italien)with a 16 " barrel. It's not a cut down it has been made like that for an ochard owner to have on the tractor for the birds :)
My econo "cheap" version of a shorty NEF with guard cats.
The 12ga has the interal shell carrier moved to the back of the stock and a Safariland model 4148-12-43 five round carrier added to the outside on the left side of the stock.

so what does it take for a regular joe-citizen like to me to purchase a SBS?
edit: BTW, what does NEF stand for?

In order to purchase a short-barreled shotgun, you would need to first, figure out if they are legal where you live. (You're in Atlanta, so, yes they are legal.)
Next, you locate the shotgun you want to buy. It's easier if it's already within your state. Otherwise, you have to have it transferred through an NFA-weapons dealer in your state. If the gun is privately owned, in your GA, you don't need to go through an FFL.
Pay for the gun.
Fill out the following paperwork:
2 copies of BATFE Form 5320.4, commonly called a Form 4. To each of these forms, you attach a passport photo.
2 copies of the Certificate of Compliance. (Basically, you sign a document stating that you are a US citizen.
Get the local PD or sheriff's dept. to do two fingerprint cards. (In the box marked ORI, there is a very specific bit of info that needs to be written. This is essentially a routing number, that says were the fingerprint info will be sent.)
Have the local Chief of Police, Sheriff, or DA sign the Form 4's. (Alternatively, you can form a corporation or trust, and bypass the signature.)
Send all your paperwork, fingerprints, and a $200 check to BATFE, there in Atlanta, and wait about a month.
If you already have a shotgun that you wish to turn into an SBS, you just file Form 1's, instead of Form 4's. The rest of the steps are the same. Once the Form 1 is approved, you can either cut your barrel, or attach a shorter barrel.

great! thanks for the info. i wonder what/if any hesitance (is that a word?) i would get from the LEO's signing the forms. or do they just sign them willy-nilly. hmmm.
I would think that with AAC being right next door, they Atlanta PD is used to seeing Form 4's. In fact, I have a friend there in town who's done 3-4 recently, with nary a problem.

I think your cat must really like that gun, it looks like he's getting ready to "mark" it as his own.

I still prefer my pump shotgun. Single shot shotguns are just too much work. I like my next shot one rack away.

Absolutely, for serious, "social" work, there's nothing like an 870. My 870 is a Police Magnum, with an 18" bbl, Rem factory +2 ext., Trijicon front and rear sights, Surefire SF618FA foreend, Wilson hi-vis follower, Wilson BigHead safety, Mesa Tactical low-tube adapter w/ 6-position stock, Mesa Tactical 6-round shell holder on the left side, Mesa Tactical 4-round shell holder on the right side, and a CQB Solutions 3-point sling. It's a tough, workhorse of a shotgun.
"The Beast" was strictly built because I was bored at work. The only way I'd use it as a defensive arm is if there were no other option. This is solely a fun TOY.

Being a typical female cat, the grey tabby Precious, "She" owns everything and I get to use or play with it! She bosses around the little red tabby Goldie too!

I too prefer a pump. I got the single shot H&R/NEF so I would have at least something to keep next to my headboard. I had sold all my other long guns to make ends meet a few years ago. I had a drug dealer living in the first floor apartment below me and my roomy and a crack house one street over at the time.
Forget the video, I want to see some good pics of that shotgun:supergrin:

How did you fix the forehand??

I could move about 4 miles and change that, but..... I don't want to. I can live with 18 inch shotgun barrels, I guess.

I bought the stock and foreend set from Advanced Technologies. They make them for NEF/H&R shotguns.
I originally bought it for an NEF .22 I had picked up for teaching my son. I figured the adjustable length of pull would make it easier for each of us to use the rifle. I sold the .22, but kept the stock set, because I had this project in mind a long, long time ago. It was just recently that I've come into a position where I can do it without spending $200 on the tax stamp.
The one in the picture is the first one I built, which has been sold. the one in the video is number two. Number three is probably not that far into the future. (I want to try shooting two at a time. :devildance: )
I have a 16" Richardson & Harrington shotty that I could convert like that.
Hey OEF_VET any hints how youv'e done it
:)
Picture is already saved:supergrin:

I have a good gunsmith and there is no tax involved:)
OSSI,
I just marked the barrel where it came flush with the foreend, and then cut it with a hacksaw. After that, I smoothed the rough edges with a file and touched up the blueing with Oxpho-Blue.
Nice and simple. The fun at the range is significantly greater than the amount of work put into the gun.

Thanks Mate
I just sent the pic to my gunsmith and aked if he could do that.
He mailed me back just minutes ago. He has to see my shotty, but he thinks he can:) :) :)
You know, of course, that you have to post pics and/or video.
Oh, and if I ever find my way to Tasmania, you have to invite me to the range.

I kinda like it... Would need a recoil dampening stock like a knoxx industries one. I dont think they make one for a NEF though.. Would be a nice light weight door buster shotgun...Good I idea though.. Dont let these losers on here give you crap about this..
man what a beast:supergrin:

Dont you have to have your name, city and state engraved on the SBS also....at least for a form 1 ?

Yes, you do. I am a Type 07 FFL / Class 2 SOT. Therefore, I have to put my company name, city, and state on the receiver. The picture was taken before that work was completed. One of the great things about being a manufacturer is the fact that I don't have to ask BATFE permission to build an NFA weapon, and wait on their approval before I complete the work. I simply do the work, and notify them via Form 2 within 24 hours of it being built.
