I'm looking into purchasing one of the two.
The 500 Persuader is in the used "bin" at Gander Mountain for about 300 (after sales tax). The 590 (heat shield, bayonet lug, etc.) is listed on one of the forums I'm on as a FTF kind of thing for $300. If I remember correctly, the 500 Persuader at Gander was an 8-shot version with the pistol grip kit.
Anyone have any advice on which one to lean towards. I figured with Gander there might be something to fall back on if it's a lemon, but wasn't sure on their policy on used firearms. I've only dealt with the Mossbergs in our gun club safe (500's for shooting clays), so I'm not sure if one would be better than the other. Help!?!

There are some variations in each of the models you list. It would be helpful to know the Mossberg part#. Generally, however, I'd opt for the 590.

The persuader was very similar to this one:

Next time I'm at gander I'll take a look at it. IIRC, the tag said 8-shot, Includes pistol grip kit. So quite possibly a 50579 (according to mossbergs website).
The 590 is almost identical to this one (this one belongs to the CPO I know):

Only the one I was looking at is minus the sling and plus a bayonet lug.

I went with the 590A1 due to the Ghost Ring sights. The 590 you appear to be considering has standard shotgun sights I believe.

I went with the 590 for the following reasons in no particular order:
ghost ring sights
heavier barrel
parkerized finish
metal trigger guard
but my 590 is the 6-shot 18.5" version. most people go with the 20"

I have the 20" 590 w\heatshield great gun, mine didnt come with ghost rings but I added them recently.I dont seen any reason why the presuader would be a bad gun.I just liked the evil looking 590.
Edit: One thing you might consider, I do wish I had opted for the 18.5" the 20" is a little long for CQ in a house or something.20" magazine does hold 8 + 1 and I think the 18.5" is 6 + 1.

I just bought a Mossberg Persuader 500 seires... Mine has 5 shot 12 gague capacity pistol grip and a crown in front for bashing in whatever comes in the way. Also wrapping around the crown is a recoil supressor. Its mean looking. Anyone else have what I just picked up.

I like the 590 because of how easy it is to disassemble and clean out the magazine tube. It's part of the regular cleaning routine with all of my shotguns. It's always full of junk...and I'm not about to risk a failure due to this easily prevented problem.

this is the exact reason why i went with the 18.5" variant. it was hard to not get the 9 round 20" version, but I figured I have bigger problems if 7 rounds of 00 didn't fix the problem.
plus a sidesaddle with 6 shells keeps extra shots handy.
