View Full Version : 870 for shtf weapon
I have an 870, and was thinking that I needed a good shtf weapon. But the thought crossed my mind that I already had a good one. I was thinking that if I added a magazine extension, possibly a m4 collapsible stock set and a vertical foregrip it would make a good shtf weapon. Also a very good shoulder arm to go next to my g21. Does anyone else feel like a setup like that would be formidible in a unlikely but untimely case of local or national panic?

With the right sights the 870 will make a great weapon (with slugs) out to 100 yards. Past 100 yards rifles make more sense.
well, I highly doubt that I would ever engage someone past 100 yards. If there was another shtf situation like katrina, but more widespread and hit my are, I would be more worried about food for my family than trying to engage BG's at 400 yards.

I just purchased an 870 Express Magnum for $150. It's in good shape but I need to do some work on it. 20" barrel with vent rib , synthetic foregrip and wood stock. It'll be seeing a trimmed down barrel, collapsable stock and side saddle in the very near future. I'll be doing a little bit more as time passes but those three items will be corrected post haste.

My shtf collection. I have since added a side saddle to the 870 P MAX and a Colt 357 Python. I have never considered a revolver a good shtf weapon because of the low capacity but I added it anyway because I can.

Nice collection. Between your Bushmaster M4 and 870P Max, you have a balance of shoulder weapon coverage.
Your Glock with light is great sidearm for SHTF situations as well.
the only limits of a SG are the range, and the capacity.. that said, in its realm the SG is a superior weapon...
I would turn to my 870P (plain old style with bead) with confidence.
with a G21 on a dropleg holster, and an 870, you will be quite formidable... (i would skip the vertical grip on the 870)

I'd skip the vertical grip on the forend, but the M4 type stock makes a lot of since. Look at a Knoxx SpecOps stock. A magazine extension and side saddle makes since. Also, add a SureFire forend light.
The shotgun is the best all around weapon you can buy. You'll never find a more versatile weapon for SHTF.

:agree: Add a single point sling & you are good to go. Even w/ a bead sight you can get pretty close out at 100yds w/ slugs, but #00buck at 100yds is going to keep someones head down. My 870 is ready to grab & go w/ 17rds on the weapon. That & a highcap USP or Glock should get you buy w/ little fuss.
Carver, how would I get a VangComp Barrel?
I have heard that are really effective.
check vangcomp.com
basically call and pay and ship him your barrel..
softer shooting and way better groups. my 18" hd 870 w/vang'd bbl will hang all day shooting clays up against choked 28" SG's

Carver,
I LOVE that plain Jane. Very nice!
The biggest must-have addition to an 870 is a light. The best option: a Surefire foreend. After that, a sidesaddle, an adjustable stock, a sling, a mag extension, and night sights are the best upgrades.
Got the light, got the stock (with the spare ammo), got the sling, will have to wait for the sights and vangcomp, they are both more than the price of the shotgun!
I have heard that the extended mag is not that reliable, and the point of aim changes every time it is removed.

HA. Never had a problem, or herd of a problem with factory Remmy,... and i like my Wilson even better...
I could see if you had the dimple model, and drilled it out poorly, it would suck. But otherwise, no problems.
Sounds like a good place to start on the long guns to me. You can't go wrong with an 870, some may be a little better than others, but they are ALL good!
After that I would add an AK in 7.62x39 and then maybe a bolt action 308 for long range stuff. Good luck!
 Too many good 870 suggestions to cite individually!
here's my list;
1. Vertical forearm. NO. Just gets in the way of handling. Hurts your hand after lots of shooting.
2. Knoxx stocks are recoil-reducing stocks. They have a big herky spring inside the grip. This can make the weapon more suitable for a smaller person or a person who isn't so used to the kick of a shottie. The Spec-Ops stock is length-adjustable.
3. CopStock by Knoxx (see above). Now you've got a folder and the weapon is 8" shorter. Using it with the stock folded is like having a pistol-grip shottie and you still get the recoil-reducing action.
4. Mag extension - never had a problem with one, drilled or otherwise. Most of mine are Remmie extensions, but I have the other brands.
5. Tactical light: the Surefire forearm is unbeatable for flexibility in terms of light control and it is supposed to be engineered for shock reliability. I've fired maybe 700 rounds with one and haven't treated it too well, but it just keeps on working. I have cheaper alternatives and one stopped working after about 30 rounds....concidence?
6. Sights - What range are you engaging at? I think of a tactical shottie as a short range point and shoot weapon. Sights for me are just extra weight and expense.
7. Laser - tactical shotties are cheap to start with. I tend to get cheap lasers and just strap them on with a clamp.
8. Sling. Yes.
The 870 for SHTF and/or HD is a natural.
My daughter recently bought her first home.
She wanted something for HD that could be used by her.
She has shot some handguns, but, she wanted something that would knock the snot outta somebody that meant her harm.
She suggested a shotgun.
Here is what I set up for her.
Remington 870 Express. The 26" barrel was set aside and an 18-1/2" IC barrel put on it.
The factory hardwood stock and forend were taken off and a factory synthetic 'sport' (longer) forend along with a Knoxx SpecOps stock w/Limbsaver pad installed.
The longer synthetic forend will aide her in handling this longer SG, because of her stature.
The inside of the receiver had all 'roughness' removed from it, where the action bars slide, plus the action bars were 'touched up' too.
This shotgun is 100+% percent reliable.
For when the SHTF, here is what she has:

If it's your primary weapon, you don't need a sling, but otherwise and you'll want one.
That looks like mine. Only I have added a Surefire Forend, (expensive but excellent)
Also what is on the grip, and does it stay put?
I had one once on an old 17, but it kept moving, and the finger ridges were not in the same place on each draw, so I dumped it.

I was going to put the Surefire FE on this, but, I've read from other guys that have experienced some pain from the recoil impulse of the shotgun, in their left hand from the 'hump' of the light mount.
Since this is for my daughter, we decided against the Surefire FE, for now.
As for the grip, it is is a Hogue "Handall" I think the name is. I purchased it from Knoxx, when I bought the SpecOps.
It stays put, like it was glued in place.
I haven't put a shellholder on it, yet. I'm undecided on which one to get. I really like the one (4 shell) offered by Mesa Tactical, but, my daughter is not really that strong.
This HD scattergun is more for her to take a stand in her bedroom and stay put, if things 'go bump in the night.'
(Side note: I've set up a couple of floodlights in her b-room, so that if/when she 'confronts the bad guy[s]' they will be blinded by the lights as they enter the b-room. 2 x 150 watts, halogen.)
These lights look like 'track lighting' but, are not directed towards the vanity/dressing mirror!
Thanks for reading.

I bought the one from Knoxx. It is very easy to install (even for me!)
It comes with two cheek-pieces, one for regular sights, and the other for optical sights.
A 5 shell holder, and a watertight storage compartment for earplugs and spare batteries.
