View Full Version : Where can I find 5.56 ammo in Houston?
I just bought my first AR15 at the gun show this past Saturday (RRA Elite. Mid length.). I have been to 4 different stores in SW Houston and have yet to find 5.56 ammo. Did you guys buy it all? I've tried 2 Academys and 2 Carter Countrys. The only thing they had was .223 Rem for $17/box. Can't afford that. I have ordered a few hundred rounds of Guatemalan Surplus from AimSurplus but I'm sure that will take a couple of weeks to get here. I'd like to try out the new weapon within the next couple of days. Any suggestions?

Do you have a sportsmans warehouse? They have good deals on .223 AE as well as Black Hills remanned 55gr .223. Very good ammo for plinking, training, or target practice IMO.
No Sportman's Warehouse in Houston. But thanks for replying.
Definitely check out Bass Pro Shop at Katy Mills mall. I recently picked up some 5.56 Winchester at the store in Grapevine (Dallas) for a good price ($5.99/20). They also have inexpensive .223 Winchester ($5.99/20) and Remington UMC. I was amazed at the good prices. It seems that Bass Pro has come down some on their ammo and powder prices lately.
You might also try Gander Mountain. I've never had any luck there, but you've checked almost everywhere else.
Finally, you might want to check out some of the shooting ranges and smaller gun and discount stores. Sometimes they have ammo on the shelf or in the back.
Walmart still carries Remington UMC .223 for a reasonable price.
Keep checking at the different Academy stores. Sometimes they have it, sometimes they don't.
Thanks for the suggestions. I may head over to the Bass Pro shop tomorrow and see what they have.
Found some at Bass Pro Shop. Bought 10 boxes and I'm hoping the Guatemalan Surplus ammo I bought from AIM will be here soon.
Oh, and I love my AR! It was so much fun to get out and shoot it. Can't wait to go back to the range.
Did Bass Pro have 5.56 or just .223?
The AR-15s are addicting. I got one earlier in the year and bought another a few months afterward.
They had both. I bought 10 out of the 15 boxes of 5.56 that they had. It was 5.99 or 6.99 a box.
