View Full Version : My G20 thought about going KB!
Thankfully it did not.
I'm using the factory barrel, with a fairly new factory-type recoil spring, so this is an ammo problem.
What I can't recall is what ammo I was using. It was either:
Double-Tap 180gr FMJ OR Hornady XTP 200gr. The cases are Hornady, so if DT never used Hornady cases, it must have been the Hornady ammo.
Here are some big pics:

When I had my Glock 20 I had some cases that bulged like that. Doubletap 165gr goldots if I remember correctly.
I've never had any bulge like this. It sure looks serious to me! Especially since I think these were moderate level factory Hornady loads. (200gr 1075fps)

My suggestion is to not use that ammunition again. Just because it causes an overpressure condition in one gun does not mean that the ammunition is out of spec(although it is a possibility). That is why reloaders have to work a load up in each gun. A load that is safe in most guns is not safe in all guns.
I think I may have got a bad batch of it because I've fired about 100rnds or more of Hornady 200gr and the cases didn't look like this.
I'm not sure which batch it was from because rounds have been loaded in magazines, put back in boxes, etc. I still have about 100rnds of this ammo.

I had a KB with my 20 about 3 weeks ago.
I bought 750rds of 180gr speer gold dots
from a gun show. Shot about 322rds with no problems,
decent accruracy, then booooom. It blew the
mag out of the well. I was very lucky.I was not
injured and my 20 was undamaged. I bagged all
the rest of that ammo up and have been trying to
get rid of it.Guess its time to start reloading
or get a 40S&W conversion barrel.
In my stock g20 bbl, all 3 weights of hornady factory did that. I'd have to guess Hornady's brass is either softer or thinner than the other brands. Works fine in a kkm bbl though.
ditto
same here all of the new boxed hornady ammo shows these high pressure signs. Nowhere close to a KB but the brass shows bulging. I do believe it due to softer material. Hornady brass sucks imho.
i would personally email and contact them and show those pictures to them.

Thats the main reason why I took the pics!
Thanks guys! I'll you know how Hornady handles this.
Guess I need to place an order with DT and Georgia Arms!

YIKES! I'm sure you know NOT to shoot any more of that stuff. I dont care what barrel you're using, that isn't safe to shoot. Notice the extractor claw marks and stretching along WITH the bulging.
Let Hornady know about them puppies! Stay Safe.
I've had the same probs with Hornady 200gr XTP in 10mm and also 2 flavors of Hornady 357 Mag XTP.
My G20 barrel is apparently an early one, with visible slop and a hugified unsupported area. It gets fed milder stuff, and no Hornady at all. It does fine with Ranger, FBI 190s, HydraShoks, and for some reason even ProLoad (180gr @ 1200fps).

Ditto. I had 8 out of 20 cases "smile" like that from 180grn XTP's. All of the Hornady brass I had went into the scrap bucket.

Hmm...I'm getting that on a "nothing to worry about" 1 to a "Wow, someone was praying for you!" 10, these cases are about a 7. Is that about right??
My G20 is an early 2nd gen.
Hmm....guess I have some Hornady ammo to sell!

I would say that if those are once fired cases and thats how they popped out of your pistol, that they are closer to 8-9 out of 10. They really look unsafe to me. Those are borderline splitting wide open. You don't want that... that is, if you want to keep your hands and face.
Also, I would make sure that IF you DO sell them, please warn the person... or just don't sell them. I'm sure Hornady will replace them for you so thats another option.

I have a G20 I bought new in 1994.
Because of the following pic, I switched to an aftermarket barrel.

Of course I'd tell them, but now I'm thinking there could be liability if I sold them at all. I think I want money or product from Hornady, pull these rounds and maybe just sell the bullets.

Have you contacted Hornady to let them know what happened? Assuming your pistol is in good working order, you could be saving the next G20 owner a horrible experience.
What is the Lot number of the rounds?
Hornady replied and said this was "typical" case bulge from a Glock. (I sent a pic) Basically they said they are safe.
If I sent them back they offered to replace them. I don't think I'll go through the cost and trouble. I think I'll just shoot them. I always wear eyes and ears and with these rounds I'll wear gloves. I certainly won't buy any 10mm Hornady ammo. I have 9mm XTP ammo and it's been fine from my G19.
The six boxes I have are from these lots:
3050665 and 3050268

Okay guys, this reply from Hornady worries me. I've got a new G20-3rd gen under the tree. Is there something I should know about these barrels or is this just an ammo fluke?

Mine did the same thing with Doubletap ammunition. I think that a particular gun will sometimes not like a particular load. Just because Ron3's gun did not work well with this ammo does not mean that yours will. Your gun may work fine with this ammo but may have a problem with another brand of ammo that Ron3's gun will shoot safely and accurately.
I've used Double-Tap and they did not buldge like this Hornady did. Neither did earlier batches of the Hornady ammo!
Weird.

Hornady brass is JUNK!
Ran a bunch of once fired hornady brass through the dillon and tried them in a my Sten MKII smg, Brass was so stretched after firing it wasnt usable. Open bolt guns will show you the strenght of brass real quick like...

I have shot +P+ ammunition by many manufacturers in all of my Glocks, current and over at least the last 12 years.
I agree that your picture is of a typical case.
I have had boxes and boxes of ammunition that have produced identical results consistently. I have never had one rupture. I have seen video of a case failure and sure don’t want to experience that, but again this bulging is pretty typical.
These bulges have occurred in my G-22, 21, 23, 27.
I am currently shooting Cor-Bon 180gr. JHP 1300fps producing right under 700ftlbs E.
Believe it or not, no pressure bulges from my little G-29.
I will be upgrading to a G-20 and maybe the longer barrel will yield different results.
I have at lease on spent case of 45ACP from a G-21 that is bulged, it is around 10 years old.

Very strange, I have not had any case deformation with my glock 20 in stock or aftermarket barrels.
