Top 3 Must Have Mods

That's right fellows (and ladies), what are the top 3 must have mods for an M4/AR15? If it matters or would change anyone's opinions this would be for a SHTF rifle.

Rail fore-end with light and vertical foregrip.


I do not consider optics or slings "mods" they are part of the weapon.


For best results, a Vickers 2pt sling from Blue Force Gear, Aimpoint Comp M2, your choice of rail system (I'm issued KAC, others are also good) a good light system, for short range a Surefire 6P works, a 9P or similar is better for longer ranges, in a Vltor scout mount and a vertical foregrip is essentially my issued weapon and it works well.

I have a Blackhawk 3pt sling but the Vickers is better, if you have a choice.

2) back up iron sights / if you already have them, a good optic

For me it is:

-Magpul MIAD full grip kit
-MI carbine rail with Magpul covers
-Pentagon light with Vltor mount

H3 Buffer
Crane O-Ring
Magpul Followers

These are the 3 main things for me. Obviously you may need other items in order to mount these, like a rail system, but a rail system alone doesn't really add anything to a weapon. With an optic, you'd definitely want back up irons as well. And the VFG is an ergonomic thing, I just think the gun points/handles much better with it.

To answer the question, it depends
For a close quarters combat gun:
Sights
Single point sling
light or grip or spring upgrade

For a longer range gun:
optics,
trigger
stock
did I mention optics?

3)Ammo, alot of ammo
4)Range time, to acclimate to the rifle and to learn the basics.
5)Training, as much as you can afford/attend.
6)Spare parts
7)Armorer's tools

Magpul 93B Stock (best cheekweld going in my opinion)
Flashlight mounted to the weapon
Quality optic (EOTECH, Aimpoint, any high quality reflex sight or a best of all ACOG)

ETA:
Since most complete rifle come with sights I left out BUIS. If you don't have sights, they are number 1.
