so i was at the range/funshop today. got to plink around and generally have a good time. after shooting i started browsing and came across their optics display case. had an Eotech 512 and an aimpoint M2 or ML2. guy behind the counter was ultra nice and mounted the eotech on my ar for me so i could see how it looked as i've never handled one before.

the red circle and dot were both, for lack of a better term, Fuzzy. the glass was clean and clear however. i asked about it, and he said it was due to the brightness. so i lightened it up, and it didnt help. I was thinking the circle and the dot should be crisp and clear, not fuzzy. is the fuzzyness normal for an eotech?

i didnt get to play with either of the aimpoints because he didnt have any mounts attached. are the reticles in aimpoints clear, or are they fuzzy as well?

i also asked about aimpoint. the base cost was about the same as an eotech. i asked about mounts and he said they didnt come with any. so for price comparisons, if i buy an eotech, its basically out the door for the sticker price. for an aimpoint, its the unit cost, Plus the cost of a mount. hence the whole thing is more expensive than an eotech. while i suppose this makes it a little more versatile in mounting options, how do you know what works best for your without going through the whole trial and error ordeal?

since cost is an issue for me, i want to get something and stick with it, and be happy with my purchase. if that means getting an aimpoint for more money, then so be it.

also, i looked at the aimpoint website, and while they have all their models listed, i couldnt find an easy comparison chart. does such a thing exist?

thanks
neil

Do you have any astigmatism? Also, have you tried looking at the target and superimposing the reticle on the target. You tend to not see the fuzziness if you do that.

actually i do have a very slight astigmatism (according to the eye doctor). i had to get glasses this year. in addition, i still dont remember if i'm far or near sighted, but i cant see as well as i used to out at distances.

but now that you mention it, when i was looking through the lens, i wasnt aiming at anything, just the white wall behind the counter.

The times I've actually shot with an Eotech it's been a bit fuzzy. I have no astigmatism and my eyes were lasiked so they're good.

The Aimpoint, unless cranked up too high (like maximum brightness) is not fuzzy, you just see a red dot.

Keep an eye out over at EagleFirearms.net

They have the EOtech 512 for $360 and the Aimpoint ML2 with ARMS mount for $400. They show out of stock now but I would guess that's just because of the Christmas rush. They'll have them back in stock soon.

I don't have any eye issues and both my EOtech and Aimpoint look sharp and clear to me. The EOtech a little less so than the Aimpoint but it isn't fuzzy or blooming at all.

If you don't mind going used the equipment exchange over at AR15.com is an excellent place to bargain shop.

Due to astigmatism, I cannot use the electronic sights. SO I topped my M4 off with a 2-7 scope.

With the EOTech, you have to look through the circle. If you look at the circle, it will always be fuzzy. If you are looking at the circle and dot, they get real thick and fuzzy. As soon as you look at your target, they both thin up and look smooth. Brightness does make a difference too. I keep mine on the dull side unless it is bright outside. In the house at night, I tone down the brightness a little bit. Perhaps you need to let the dealer know that so that he can better help his customers.

The EOTech is really good for leaving both eyes open. I can line up with a target using my right eye and still have peripheral vision with my left eye open.

I don't know much about the Aimpoint.

There are several vendors on AR-15.com that sell both. I just picked up an Eotech 512 for 325.00 shipped. I really like the Eotech. I might pick up an Aimpoint for my next build to compare the two.

yeah, if you try to focus on the circle or the dot, it will fuzz out on ya. Once you look at the target, it clears up. I promise.

thanks for all the replies. before i make my decision, i guess i'll just have to play with the sights some more.

it appears as though the eotech would be the more inexpensive option if i bought new. it also seems simpler for me to get the eotech than an aimpoint, as i wouldnt have to mess with different types of mounts to find what i really want.

is the rail on the upper receiver long enough to mount a 512 with a BUIS behind it? will the 512 overhang the delta ring? will it make contact with the delta ring?

My astigmatism actually only hinders my peripheral vision (my arc of sight with both eyes is 118 degrees vs. the average 141 degrees).

I love my Aimpoint. The dot is farther away on mine (scout mounted)and that I would think may help someone with astigmatism or perhaps a few other vision problems.

I have mine on the flat top receiver and have it overhanging the delta ring. I would mount it more forward on the receiver, but it is running into the handguards for now. I plan to get some sort of railed handguards, perhaps free floating. Then I can either runt he front of the EOTech out over the handrails or mount it on the handrails.
