View Full Version : 44 Blackhawk 3 screw 7 1/2 Flat top 24XX
Friends dad passed away. Found the old hogleg in the closet.
Trying to work out value. For some reason he wants to trade for some metric type auto pistol.
Anyway, it's unconverted. About 75% finish. No box or papers and some really ugly oversized "target" grips.
I'm thinking between 4 or 5 hundred bucks (Blue book). Are there any Ruger junkies out there who know better?

To me, the 'three screw' Ruger is no biggie. The condition you described, and the no box, no papers etc, is a minus if you are 'collecting it.' Even with them, in 'excellent condition', in TX, that gun still won't fetch much. $450.00 in LNIB cond, and downward from there, depending on cond. He may place a 'sentimental' (sp) value on it, which as you know, means nothing as to the gun itself, but it does to the seller. Even in his loss, he will have to understand, the gun itself, is just not worth to much in 75% condition.
I would start at $350.00, and go to $400.00..... This is me. You will have to go as high as need be, depending on how bad you want the gun.
The 'ugly grips,' mean nothing, because they can be replaced for little or nothing, with stock grips. Just look at the rest of the gun and not the grips.
There is 'no' real historic value to the three screw Ruger, that makes it a 'high dollar collectors item' or anything like that. Some people like them, and want to pay more, because they are obsolete, I understand that. It is really up to how bad you want it, like anything else. These figures above, are IMO, where I would take it.
Good luck

Post it on www.rugerforum.com. I'll bet you'll find it is worth a lot more than you think. It's not the 3 screw part, it's the "flat top" part that makes it worth more to those collectors.
ditto on the suggestion. Alot of guys would snatch that up just for the"flattop" which I do think looks much better that the current lines that are on the ruger SA revolvers.
Down here I've seen these gun list from the high 500s to once in the 600s, but then everything in FLA or south FLA is over priced imho.
P.S: If you have a camera place a picture up in this forum.

The "flat top" does nothing to aid in the strength of the gun, which is 'one reason' Ruger redesigned it with a stronger top strap. As i said above, there are those who want them, (i was under the impression you wanted the gun), seems you are just looking to help this old boy get a value on it.....
As far as 'ebay' I no nothing about it, never use it.
As far as sales in a store, a gun show (especially), etc, that gun in 75% cond, is NOT a 500.00 gun. Someone may pay that much for it, but it is not worth it, and can be had buy the savy gun shopper for 350.00 to 400.00, "in the condition" you described.
noway, and carassius, seem to be way ahead of my electronic knowledge, so i suppose if your buddy can get bigger bucks for it through these media, man go for it. 'Don't try it at a gun show, or in TX.' These are a dime a dozen.
Good luck!

1st rule in marketing and sales, it isn't what it worth but what people are willing to pay for it. That's why a 50ct can of coke in my local grocery store sales for $1.00 or $1.25 or even more , at the racetrack, beach, ballpark,etc..... on a hot summer day ;)
For the orginal poster, I just took a peek at the other mention forum and the 1st FT 44mag post I found, that poster listed his gun at $795.00 dollars. The person that buys it will think it's worth $795.00 dollars ;)
What you can do if you are really wanting to sell it is do some searchinga round on gunbroker, local stores, pawns or rugerforum and then that can give you an idea of what you can sell it for.

noway, I understand buying and selling, I been doing it with horses and cattle, (and guns), all my life. ;) Just saying it ain't worth it. Like I told the poster above, "It depends on how bad you want it...."
I realize someone will give a fortune for something "not worth a red cent". I have seen people buy horses that were knot heads, and 'not fit' for cuttin horses, but their wife "wanted it," so they gave through the nose for it.
As I said, I thought he was "buying it for himself", and I was telling him, it ain't worth 500.00. If they are trying to scalp some old boy for 700.00 that is what it will be, a scalp. Cause that is a 400/450.00 gun (in these parts, tops)! That is all I'm trying to say. What they do with it, and how much they get for it, is up to them. I am just passing along it's "actual worth" as is..... ;)
"Unfortunately", there are people in the gun shows, trying to sell Winchester rifles to folks that are well used, for 700.00/800.00, They aren't worth it! There are folks trying to pass off used cars down at 'Sammy's clip 'em joint' for twice what their worth.
Your right, and as I said, "it depends on how bad you want it." If the "Ebay'ers," will pay that kind of money for that gun, i guess these boys have prosperd. But in the end.....It ain't worth it! ;)

I appreciate the input guys.
I am not really that interested in the gun (I have to put that in just in case he reads this:supergrin: ), I just happen to be one of the few gun-guys my buddy knows. It's a nice gun, but was owned by someone not that into maintenance.
35 years within a block of the ocean and not much oil will do a number on the bluing.
Also, his wife just had a kid and now she says "I hate that (*&@^%$ing thing!!" must be hormones or something.
Whoever ends up with it will have to drop some cash with Cylinder and Slide.
Blue book shows it at $400 with 60%.
$1,200 @ 100%
