Opinions?
The idea is I want something I can mount an optic or laser on and expect things to stay zeroed. First Samco's M-33 handguard set is not steady enough for this. I would also like to be able to put the thing on without having to take the whole upper apart to do it, as I would with most freefloat set ups.
I added the Surefire quad rail to an old bushy I had. The weight gain is very noticable compared to the standard plastic short forearm. Installation was easy, just remember to use the loctite on the front two studs. It is a spendy piece however, and depending on what you'd like to hang on your rifle there may be other options.
I would pass on the Surefire and get the MI forend.

MI forend? What company is this?
For now, the only specific plans I have are forward handgrip and a weaponlight with a laser. The light would be a quickly dismountable type, like a TLR-2, and I would like to have the laser remain reasonably close to zero when I put it on and take it off. I don't want to add a lot of weight to the rifle if I can avoid it.

Midwest Industries. I'd go for their freefloat option if you are counting on using it for some sort of sighting device.

I put a set of surefire rails on mine about a year ago. I like them as far as not having a free float system on it. I also put a set of YHM 2 piece set on a cop buddy of mines. They seem pretty tight also and no screws to rattle loose. It goes on the same way the plastic ones do.

Do not mount an optic or laser on a rail system that is not free floating. This leaves out the SF rails. MI and TROY are both excellent values and offer FF rails.

One of the biggest reasons I was trying to avoid the freefloat was so that I can reach the bbl to oil it now and then to keep it from rusting. How does one do this with a free floater in place?

I have the Troy Industries MRF-C on my RRA/STAG M4gery. They require a little work to install, but well worth it IMO.

The MI, Troy and Sampson FF forearms, have removable bottom rails so that you can attach a M203 launcher. Which means, that removing the bottom rail will allow access to the barrel. This is the main reason that I prefer these type of forearms, easy access.
eta: Here is a picture showing the bottom rail removed, sorry it is the only pic I have loaded up.

KAC rails do the same thing, we swap our bottom rails for M203s daily.

I woldn't worry about a Phosphated barrel rusting. In all my years shooting AR's I have never oiled a barrel. Go with a FF rail.
