I am looking to purchase/build an AR for 100 yard target shooting as its primary function. It would be nice if I could also use this rifle for home protection as well. My question is about the different gas systems used. A carbine with a 16" barrel and telescoping stock would be my first choice, but I am not against a standard 20" barreled flat-top rifle. What are the differences in the gas systems used, and is one type more reliable than the other? I am looking primarily at Bushmaster and Rock River if it makes a difference.
Sorry if this question has been asked before, but I couldn't find the explanation I was looking for. I am just looking for a good reliable firearm. If it's an issue of having to clean more often, I have no problem with that.
Thanks in advance for the replies,
Paul
Both will probably suit you just fine. The 20" has a longer gas tube, which in theory is supposed to mean slightly enhanced reliability. I have not had a problem with my 16" and it has seen all sorts of ammo, from very cheap and dirty (Wolf) to fairly expensive (Hornady TAP) and a lot of what's in between (WWB, ADCOM, AE, Ultramax, etc).
A possible compromise would be going to a mid-length
carbine, which would give you a little bit longer gas system, but the same 16" barrel.
The carbine gas system can be very reliable, and if you find a AR that you like that utilizes the carbine system, buy it, as it really isnt that big of a deal.
However, the midlength gas system is very impressive in that it also reduces felt recoil, and a longer sight radius. But then again, the AR's recoil is very tame anyway, and most folks like to run some sort of optics, so it is a toss up.
I prefer the midlength gas system with 14.5" and 16" barrels.

Agree. Middy gas system with a 16" barrel would be my first choice.
For AR's, I would look at Sabre Defence, Colt, LMT, BCM or CMMG over RRA or BM. These 5 manufacturers use better materials in their weapons and follow the military standard on how a weapon should be built.
If you for some reason, don't want an AR from any of those 5, look at Stag Arms or S&W.
