Both my 2nd Gen G19's have always been totally omnivorous. But this AM I was testing 147 grain Winchester Ranger T (first time for this load) ammo from my daily CCW G19. Repeated several times with two different good funtioning magazines was the phenom when the slide would lock back when and only when there were 3 rounds left in the mag.
Usual trng ammo (Rem UMC 115gr) and 124 gr Gold Dots didn't.
This load did not exhibit this lock back with one of the mags (G17 mag) in my G17.
My guess is some idiosyncrasy between the lenght/size of this round and this particular G19. Since other loads ran fine w/o early lockup with the same mags.
Anyone noticed this or anything similiar? Any theories?
FYI - About 4-5K rounds this year of various 9mm ammo through the five 9mm Glocks I have so I've seen a good bit of them shooting and cylcing perfectly this year.
Just a hunch, but - if you have several thousand rounds on that recoil spring, and that magazine spring, and if you're shooting a hot round like the Rangers, your slide may be cycling forward faster than your magazine follower is moving up. As to why 3 rounds is the magic number, who knows?
Might try replacing the recoil spring.

Thanks night. I'll look at that. The 147 grain Ranger seemed light compared to the +p Gold Dots. I ran a couple hundred non Ranger's through it Sunday to clear my head. All good. The ISMI spring in it has just about 1500 rounds on it so I didn't even consider that. But I'll run the recoil spring lockup test on it and have a look.
Thanks much for the input!

1) When you say the slide is locking back, are you experiencing a jam/failure to feed, or is the slide stop lever being activated when the mag isn't yet empty, locking the slide back early?
2) 147gr is not typically a "hot" load and certainly isn't going to cause the slide to cycle unusually fast compared to lighter grain +P or +P+ ammo.
If the slide is actually locking back and not jam-related.. remove the slide, insert a loaded mag and remove one round at a time. Check the clearance between the actual bullets and the tab on the inside of the slide stop lever, especially when you hit the magic "3 rounds remaining" that is causing you problems. I have seen guns where a slightly out of spec part allowed bullets of a particular weight/shape to contact the lever, activating it just as the follower would if the mag were empty. If this is what's happening, it's easy to fix.

hot damn, now we're talkin! I'll check that out and post observations. BTW, it's an actual lock back. On a soft shooting load. Thanks much! I'll be back.

Have you ever taken out the locking block and trigger pins?
