View Full Version : How do I get the lead out.
Hello ruger fans,
I just got a ruger sp101(GP100 soon)and I am new to the wheelgun world. How do I clean it so not to get lead build up.I just cleand it like I do my semi-auto's but I don't want to get lead building up in it,so what do I need to do.Thanks.
A key question is spotting leading in the first place. That slightly darker gray streak down the center of your lands is lead, and you're going to have it after shooting lead bullets through the gun.
If it hasn't got buildup already and you're the new owner, just keep it clean with one of the commercial solvents such as Hoppe's or Bore Scrubber. After a healthy range session, and after a couple wet-patch soakings, give it a couple dozen good strokes with a properly-sized copper brush found in most cleaning kits (never use those stainless ones), paying attention to the forcing cone area at the cylinder end.
If you've acquired a used gun with alot of buildup, go get one of those Chore Boy copper brushes (for scrubbing SS cookware), cut a piece off and wrap it around a slightly smaller bore brush so that you get a really tight fit and scrub away.
Then follow normal cleaning & lubricating procedures IAW your manual. The above is nothing magic; Americans have been cleaning lead out of bores long before jacketed bullets were in general use.
