What can I expect?

I posted this over a AR15.com but this site is my first love LOL so lets get some answers here also.

So on a decent AR say a RRA or such how many rounds can you put down range before you have to start replacing parts? I was just wondering because it sure sounds like they need a lot of maintenance. I am thinking about getting a AR but it seems like the more I read the more I see people talking about replacing this and that after a few thousand rounds. With what its going to cost to build this thing I really would like to know whether or not I will have to spend another 2-3 hundred every couple of thousand rounds for upkeep. If that's the cause I believe Im going to have to pass on this idea for now. Hopefully it is just people needing to screw around with their weapons and not completely necessary. So how many rounds can I expect to get with regular cleaning and so on?

I'm sure you'll get a bunch of people telling you that this and that part needs to be replaced, but I'm not so sure.

To answer your question, it would depend on whether or not this is going to be a defensive gun, or just a gun for having fun at the range.

I think defensive guns should be dedicated to that purpose. If you're going to use your defensive gun at the range, and put a couple of thousand rounds through it a year, then you should replace parts on a regular basics. I thinks this is a bad idea, but you can make that decision yourself.

If this gun is just for fun at the range, then there is no need to replace parts until something breakes, or the gun stops working. You should get a minimum of 5-10 thousand rounds before something breakes. If this gun is just for fun, then a stock Bushmaster or RRA will serve you well. Don't listen to the people telling you that you need to replace a bunch of parts, it's just not necessary. These guns will run well right out of the box.

I think the last poster hit it right on the head...if this is for the range and just fun, then don't worry about it too much until something breaks (which should be a LONG time coming before you see that). The AR is a very simple system so it's easy to tinker with so I suspect that's what you're seeing here with people working on theirs.

If you keep the inside clean of carbon build up from shooting, you will not have any problems with it and won't regret buying it. :thumbsup:
