I picked up a SW 1911PD in august of this year, and it shot amazing. Way more accurate then any of my glocks, and felt much more substantial. However, when i tried to pull the barrel bushing off during disassembly, it wouldnt budge, i ended up sending it into SW who replaced the slide.
The new slide and barrel bushing come apart easily, but ive noticed over the last two sessions, spent casings tend to eject directly back into my head as opposed to back and to the right. If i didnt wear shooting glasses, i would be blind in my right eye by now. In a box of 100 i had 5 casings hit my shooting glasses, and 6 hit my forehead directly above the glasses, one of which opened a small cut on my forehead. I ended up flinching before each shot, not due to the recoil, but do to the knowledge that there was a 10 percent chance that i was gonna get smacked in the head.
Does anybody have this problem?

Yes, mine did the exact same thing when it was new and I've read about this from others many times. fwiw mine did improve after 500 rounds and the only thing I can attribute that to is extractor tension.
I did try to reangle the ejector, but it didn't improve the ejection pattern. So I wore a cap for awhile. Then in my process of experimenting the problem worked itself out. :headscratch:

It is probably the ejector/exctractor. Any good 1911 smith can adjust the angle. I have one that used to hit me every 4-5 rds, now they just pile up in a nice little group off to my right about 3ft.

Look and see if your ejected brass has a large dent on the left side of the rear of the cartridge (back by the primer). If it does it more than likely has an uneven breechface with a "ledge" where the breechface meets the slide. The raised area causes the cartridge to be held against the slide to tightly. This causes the round to eject hard and late in the gun. The cartridge raises almost staight up to strike the ejection port at the 12:00-1:00 postion sending it back into your face. You will also see the brass marks from the rounds at this position on the ejection port.
I know because mine is back at Smith right now for this and the hammer following the slide when it is released. If you want to read more on it go over to the 1911 forum and do a search on "ledge" or "breechface ledge". It is pretty well documented that this has happened on many of the 1911 Commander sized guns. Smith was fixing them. But some said they did not fix them because it was "cosmetic"
and did not affect function. A raised ridge in the breechface is not cosmetic. It is bad machining. And The burn on the right side of my face from the hot brass slipping through my ball cap and safety glasses hopefully is cosmetic!
