View Full Version : New G21 / Light + Laser Poll
I broke down and bought my third Glock  . I traded in a Beretta 92FS for a G21. I already have two G30's with some goodies on them like the extended slide release, extended mag catch etc but no lights and lasers.
I have read all of the threads here at GT (LOTS OF INFO!) about the light/laser combos. I would like to get a poll on what you would buy? The GTL? Streamlight? SureFire and which model. Do any of these have a pressure switch or do they all have regular switches?
TIA
Mase
I would like to pick up a G-21 myself. I am holding off until the new year to see if the rumors of NEW glock models comes true. Anyways, I have a Tlr-1 that I am thrilled with and if I were to do it again I would get the tlr-2. This little light is a MUST HAVE on your night stand. Have fun, be safe.
Congrats on a world class .45 ACP! You will no doubt find it as reliable as it is accurate!
The TLR is indeed a nice weapon light--and priced right! It was just making its debut when I was making my purchases. I'll probably buy a TLR my third time around.
I bought two SureFire X200's--an "A" and a "B", and I also added a LaserMax to my G21 & Judy's G19. The accessories have proved to be outstanding on either pistol!
The best rig for indoors, IMO, is the X200B with LaserMax on either gun. You get great performance, accuracy, and independent systems that continue to work if the other fails.
As shown (see attached), the G21 has factory Meps and the G19 sports Trijicons.
I'm going to give AmeriGlo Operator sights, in yellow/green, a whirl on my next Glock--a G30.

Thanks!
I have readthe threads about the LaserMax failures which does give me some concern about a profuct that is expensive. When you say that they are independant systems would you say that you could use them effectively ~ not just at the range? The LaserMax plus the light puts me into the $450 to $500 range which is twice as much as the combo.
TIA

X200B with DG-11 pressure switch.
My advice, make sure you master your weapon first before purchasing an accessory. The weapon light is an accessory not a necessity. Just my suggestion.
Here's my Surefire military:

1) Understandably so! There are too many problems with LM described, not to cause concern. Still, there is no question in my mind that many LaserMax complaints are not valid, because my direct experience with the product in Glock 9 mm and .45 ACP says otherwise, and because so many of the initial complainers do not accurately describe the problem, and do not follow up.
Example: "The front bushing broke into two pieces!" Answer: That is a two piece capture collar that sits inside the end coil and retains the spring to the rod (see attached). It is not broken. It is designed this way to make changing the spring easy. Solution: The instructions MIGHT address this clearly! DUH! I find most instruction manuals wanting...
This is not to say other complaints aren't valid. One of three LaserMax units I purchased was defective right out of the box. I made an immediate exchange and the replacement was perfect. Conversely, I've seen reconditioned laser grips offered at retailers, so they have their problems too.
2) Yes; easily. In my history, I was a well-trained martial artist. I understand how to apply a battery of techniques (or weapons) to a situation. Analogy: A spin-kick on a crowded bus is a bad idea--a backfist or elbow has better utility, and is quite effective. This takes practice to become instinct.
I know the house, and how to skip light off a ceiling to flash-light an entire room. I know how to use wall mirrors, furniture, etc. I know better than to make an entrance with light and laser blazing.
As for the range, I rarely engage the lasers at the range any more, except when we bring guests. Some of these guests are avid hunters, and all have been impressed with the LaserMax. For myself, I usually pop in the OEM guide rod for range practice, or I shoot my G17, which is a dedicated range gun.
3) I know. It's spendy and it's subjective--I gave my opinion. The Crimson Trace grips are an excellent product, but they have features I don't care for, and won't fit my H-series G21 anyway. Many of the light/laser combos are very well made! But I like independent and redundant systems. I like how the LM leaves the ergonomics of the gun essentially stock, letting me pack a laser, but not necessarily a light. Plus, if one fails or is out for service, I still have the other. But that's me.
I was pretty keen on the new Uni-Max for many reasons--size, price, integral rail, application to multiple guns. I thought they'd come up with a great solution; but initial reports were problematic.
Best of luck with whatever you choose! I hope you never need any of it!

Good analysis RayB.
RayB thanks!
So it sounds like most of the failures are due to improper installation? I see many recommendation for the TLR2 and the price of that rig is very attractive. I do not carry and my G21 will mostly be for the range so iguess I am not terribly concerned about using it for defense. I am very skilled with my G30's and do not use any light or lasers on them.

1) As I said, I believe that "many" of the complaints are not valid, based on the complainer's sketchy information, lack of follow up, and my own first-hand experience.
The product does require a little finesse to install, as some of the points are subtle. But it isn't rocket science either.
2) It is an attractive offering. I was impressed with the TLR-1 when I examined it.
3) Basic marksmanship and skill is still where it's at! You can dance or you can't! ;)
