I was contemplating an upgrade to my scope for my hunting rifle.I was looking at a Leupold VX-I model with the LR reticle.Apparently the LR reticle has different hold points in the lower part of the crosshair for assistance on longer range shots.Here is the link for anyone who isn't familiar:

My question is has anyone used this before and how easy is it to operate.?

It depends on what type of "long range" that you want out of the scope.

I started out with a 3x9 VX2 40mm on my 30-06 and shot very well with it. Leupold has some amazing optics. But the 3x9 proved to be to short for the gun as I was taking shots past 250 yards and at times could not tell the diference at glance between a buck or doe. I now have a 4.5x14x50mm VX3 and can see them out there much better. The 50mm is brughter than the 40mm but not really by that much so I should have stuck with the 40mm. I also have a 308 with a 4.5x14 illuminated which I used this year. I found the LR to be distracting and unessary for acquiring a shot.
