Not the lightweight model but the regular commander NRM. I really like and want this pistol but am afraid it will be too heavy compared to the Glock23 I used to CCW. What are your thoughts?

View Full Version : Who owns (and actually carries) the Colt Commander ? (not LW) Ballistic40 01-03-2007, 10:41 Not the lightweight model but the regular commander NRM. Regards, Happyguy :) Ruggles 01-03-2007, 15:30 As they say a good holster and a GREAT belt will tell the tale. I find the few ounces really do not make a difference when I am dressed correctly. The LW would be fine also but the regular should not be a issue if you have the right leather. I am of the school that the belt is twice as important as the holster for a good comfy carry. Apprentice 01-03-2007, 19:58 I carried an all steel Combat Commander for years but no longer own it. As noted, with a good belt and holster the weight it not that big a deal IMO. PlasticGuy 01-03-2007, 20:22 I have (and often carry) a commander sized Les Baer 1911. It's not too heavy to carry. It does let you know if you are wearing a belt that's not up to the task though. I usually carry it in a Galco Summer Comfort IWB holster on a Dillon 1.5" belt. That combo works well, and isn't any less comfortable than my Glock 19 was in a similar quality holster/belt combo. I found that what I gained in weight I lost in width going to the Commander, so it roughly canceled out for me. The 1911 shoots a heck of a lot better in my hands though, so that was the deciding factor for me. maclean3 01-04-2007, 08:43 Originally posted by Ruggles As they say a good holster and a GREAT belt will tell the tale. I am of the school that the belt is twice as important as the holster for a good comfy carry. I couldn't agree more. While I don't currently own a Commander, I've been carrying a SA Mil-Spec (steel 5") daily for over a year now with no problem at all, I'm 5'-10" and 190 lbs. As Ruggles said, the belt is twice as important as the holster. Jack slabsider 01-06-2007, 11:06 I do. I carry an all steel Commander that is totaly original. That meaning, there has not been one mod of any kind ever done on it. No big beaver tail, no lowered and faired ejection port, no full length guide rod, no beveled mag well, no polished feed ramp, has orginal grips and sights. And with 230 grain hardball or 230 grain WW holow points, it has never had a failure to feed or eject. That's why I trust and carry it. It is perfect (imho) in every way, so I never seen or had reason to "tweek" it up. Wish I had pictures to post, sorry. The blue finish is original and not worn. I carry it in a Fobus C21, right side 4 o clock and no one has ever know it's there. I keep it stuffed with Wilson 8 round mags, and still have the original 7 round blue mags. js1392 01-08-2007, 13:43 Me. SilverState 01-08-2007, 21:47 Not a Colt Commander, but I have been carrying an Ed Brown Kobra Carry in an IWB Milt Sparks VM2 and a 1.5" Gunner's Alley belt: http://www.miltsparks.com/ http://www.gunnersalley.com/product/GABELTHALF 1911Tuner 01-11-2007, 19:09 I have three older Combat Commanders and one LW Commander in my carry rotation...along with a few 5-inch guns. Two are older Springfields, and two are Colts...one of which is a rebuilt '42 USGI and occasionally a stock, original/correct'44 Remington Rand will ride the river...but not too often. The steel-framed Combat Commanders offer good balance...They're a shade quicker out of the leather than the 5-inch guns...and they'll stand up to more hard use than the alloy-framed pistols. I like'em. scowall 01-11-2007, 19:59 why not the lt???????? pangris 01-12-2007, 10:49 I carry the LW... dirksterG30 01-12-2007, 14:47 I sometimes carry a Commander-sized Springfield Stainless. With a good gun belt and quality holster, it is not a problem. js1392 01-14-2007, 08:55 I used to carry this one regularly until it started having reliability issues. I sent it off to a 'smith and I get it back on Monday. Here's a photo of it now, that my gunsmith just sent to me. Delta-x 01-14-2007, 09:03 +1 On the right belt and holster. My Commander sits in an Aker open top holster, on an Aker B-21 belt. High and tight, I forget its on me, and its not a lightweight. vBulletin® v3.7.3, Copyright ©2000-2008, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd. | ![]() |
