As of today my Dachshunds have a grand total of 12 possums and 3 skunks(getting the odor out of their fur is almost impossible) dead. They have a technique that is seems to come from a military manual. The male will bounce around barking to keep the offender's attention, while the female stalks from behind. The female will then grab a leg, and simultaneously the male will go for the throat. This has been going on for about 4 months, ever since some residential construction began behind me.

We had a half dachshund/half terrier once when I was younger that was a "killing machine". His tactic was to run up on the prey, get in front enough to trip them and make them break their neck. I cannot begin to name the number of animals he killed in this manner--rabbits, possums, even a few (stray) cats that got into our backyard. He also was the one dog we had that got sprayed twice by a skunk.
Suggestion on the skunk smell--try putting an entire big can of tomato juice on the fur and let it dry. Do this twice, letting it dry each time. The acid in the tomatos seems to help get the smell out. This is what we used on our dachshund.
All the other dachshunds we've had have been "shakers"--going straight for the throat and then thrashing the prey side to side. I've seen mine do this to both chipmunks and birds. You gotta hand it to them, for their size, they think that they are invincible!

Sherlock........
you gotta be real careful.......those kinds of animals do carry rabies all the time, and even though your pooches are vaccinated it is still too risky for them to be in there with wild possibly rabid animals.........you better break these two "killers" of their nasty habit. Actually I do think that Doxie dogs have an inbred instinct to go after animals like moles and stuff......my grandparent's doxie would go nuts for the moles in their back yard and would furiously dig till she found one.......she'd kill several.
Have they ever been bit by these animals??
Like a train wreck, this is something that would be good to watch in film....like YouTube.......I'm not advocating anything though.........

Yup. They were bred to hunt badgers. The short little legs are to enable them to go down in the hole to get the badger.

Bosco has caught a possum twice in our back yard. (The same possum.) He drew blood in the thing once. Both times He dropped it when it played dead, and I pulled him away so it didn't get up and bite him back.

Peach,
The other interesting thing is that the dog will give a different bark depending upon what they've found. Both SRD and my parent's dachshund sound off with a different "bark" if they've found a snake versus some other kind of animal like a mole or mouse or rat. Weird but true.
