View Full Version : Types of ammo for TEOTWAWKI or whatever...
IMHO, what you really need to stock up on is one type of ammo that works reliably in your gun. For about six months I've been stocking up on WWB 147gr. JHP. Every pay day I go and purchase a box or two at wally world. I don't shoot that stuff. I keep it in metal ammo cans waiting for TEOTWAWKI...or whatever.
Having a bunch of different types of ammo is fun...but I am not going to trust my life to some stuff that I'm not sure how it's going to work in my pistola.
I also purchase (about once a month) a box of WWB 115gr. ball. Great for practice, competition and plinking. And would work just fine in a pinch for defense if needed.
I usually load Speer 124gr. GDHP cause that's what I'm issued at work and it's free. But after researching and shooting a lot of 9mm, I found that for the price, the WWB 147gr. JHP works great!
I'm assuming TEOTWAWKI stands for "The end of the world as we know it". I will not be prepared. I usually try to keep a 100 box of WWB 115 gr FMJ for killing paper and at least one box of WWB 115 gr JHP for carry. Yea, I know, my G19 has never even fired a +p Round.
The WWB 147 grain JHP is ideally suited for inexpensive practice and for stocking up on. This particular load is very accurate and reliable from all of my 9mm handguns. Price wise it's better than the latest uber JHP load that costs 2 or 3 times more per box. When the loacla Walmarts announced that the ywere no longer stocking ammo I bought them out of WWB 115 grain FMJ and the 147 grain JHP's.

I'm sticking with 9mm 45acp and 38 special.
Its easy to find that ammo about anywhere.

Absolutely a smart thing to do. I've never owned a .40 and was beginning to think about purchasing one. I even went out to fondle a G22 the other day.
However, an old Inglis BHP was sitting in the used gun case and PROJECT GUN came to mind and out came the wallet! Well, IMHO, you can't have enough 9mm's...or 45's or 38's.
Besides, if TEOTWAWKI comes about, there will be plenty of .40 laying around.

Back in the day, I carried a lot of different high powers, and the best of the lot was an older, worked over Inglis that still had the groove in the back for the shoulder stock, but not the funky rear sight.
It ran all sorts of ammo 100 percent..and I wish I still had it. Some days I really miss the old school high power.
FYI, the second best high power I ever owned was an FEG clone gun from the late 90s..paid $199 for it new. I bought a bunch of those south african 17 round mags (remember those?) and carried it with confidence, even into a clandestine drug lab when I was shooting photos with some cops.
I got caliber crazy and traded it for one of the first P-97 rugers, and Im still kicking my own ass for doing it.
Cooper was right, its the second best pistol in the world.:tongueout:

This one has the groove and the funky rear sight. Like I said, this is definitely going to be a project gun. Some asshat reblued it and didn't bother to bead blast it. So I'm thinking that when I get it I'm going to shoot the heck out of it...sort of a function check.
Then we'll (my smithy buddy and I) decide what to do to customize her. If this BHP turns out real nice I'll try and post some before and after pics. I might even try and find an original shoulder stock.
And I'm not about to argue with the wisdom of The Colonel, however, IMHO, God himself visited John Moses Browning not only once, but twice!

I know. I've gone to buy it many times but when I see I can get 100 rds for the price of 20 +p I always opt for the value pacs. Plus I really like how fast I can put 3 rds into the center of the Q target with WWB 147 gr JHP. I'm comparing that speed with my G23 with 155 gr Silvertips, which will recoil as much as +P 9mms. I'm sure.
