Hi All,

What personal defense ammo do you use for your K9 or P9? I've been using Winchester White Box and Remington UMC ammo for range/target use. However, I haven't yet selected a personal defense round. My gun seems to shoot very accurately with Hornady 115gr JHP/XTP rounds. It doesn't seem to shoot as accurately with the Federal Classic 115gr JHP (Hi Shok). In fact, the FMJ target rounds seem to be more accurate than the Federal Classic 115gr JHP rounds.

Does anyone use Speer Gold Dots in their Kahrs? If so, how do you like them?

What personal defense ammo do you recommend? The 115 gr rounds seem to shoot closer to point of aim for my gun. the heavier bullets (124 and 147gr) impact higher (using standard pressure loads).

I haven't tried any +P rounds yet, aside from some old Corbon ammo that I had in storage. Do you prefer standard pressure or +P ammo?

Does the +P stuff shoot accurately for you?

Thanks in advance

I carry with WWB 147gr JHP. Winchester labels them for "personal defense" use and if you do a search you will find some great posts that tested that round against premium defense rounds. It did exceptionally well. Expanded to about .62 consistantly and penetrated deeply.

They are about $13 for a box of 50 at wal-mart and cycle flawlessly in my C-dub.

yup. they fail one or more of the FBI clothing tests, however. which basically means they act like ball and penetrate more, but that's not always a bad thing.

I carry my P9 loaded with Federal 147 gr. HST.
Speer Gold dots are another good carry load.
I have shot some +P loads through it and they worked fine as afar as accuracy but made folllow up shots a little slower and they also had alot of muzzle flash.I would tell you to try them though and see what you think as every shooter is different.

I carry 135gr federal hydrashocks. I have them since they are low recoil. I also carry the 147gr as well.

Hi Folks,

Thanks for all of the responses so far. I have tried the WWB 147gr JHP and it seemed to function fine in my K9. However, it seemed like the heavier bullet shot a little higher than the 115gr rounds. However, I haven't tried any 147 gr bullets recently. I probably should try them again, since I've gotten much more accurate with my K9.

Mr. S. does Federal HST mean "Hydrashock?"

U.S. Customs (CBP) uses Gold Dot +P 124s in their G17s.

I carry Cor Bon 115 DPX in my P9c. It's a +p load, but it is extremely accurate and point of aim. I did some gelletin testing and was very impressed with its expansion and penetration, to include 16ga steel.
It's not cheap, running around $17 / 20 rounds, but it's the gun and round I trust 24/7.

I don't know much about different weight bullets... can you tell me the advantages/disadvantage between 135gr and 147gr? I'm looking for a quality hollowpoint in standard pressure for now for my MK9.

I only know name branding and am thinking going with Gold Dot, Federal or Corbon because of rep. I use Gold Dot in 357sig for my P239 and have had no issues.

I have the 135 grain low recoil so I am able to fire off that second shot fast and in the same place. I see no reason to every have the debate of which personal defense ammo is the best. When it comes down to it, it is all about your personal preference and shot placement. Oh, and making sure your carry ammo works flawlessly in your gun. I do notice the difference, although not that much with the low recoil. I have been looking at getting some Magtech First Defense ammo, but have not since I have to order it online.

From federals website: All 9mm personal defense hydrashok ammo.

124 grain is 1120 FPS and 345 ft lbs
135 low recoil is 1060 FPS and 337 ft lbs
147 grain is 1000 FPS and 326 ft lbs

From what I've read, it is typical for a heavier bullet to hit a little high point of aim. I think it has to due with greater muzzle flip or something. In fact, I recently read an article in one of the gun rags by Mike Venturino (spelling may be wrong)and he was talking about the very same phenomenon.

P.S. I also use WWB 147 gr. for carry.

Winchester Silvertips seem to be what your are looking for. They are about the most tested standard pressure HP you can find. There is +p stuff that is better but if you want standard pressure thats what you want. It's what I carry in my TP9.

I use 124 grain Gold Dots, standard pressure, because they were the most accurate of the premium self defense rounds in my P9 (and they have functioned perfectly in my P9, of course). Now that they have proven reliable, I can practice using the equivalent FMJ from Speer.

Thanks for the many replies. I think I'm going to try Speer Gold Dots (standard pressure), Federal Hydra shoks (standard pressure) and the Hornady 115gr JHP/XTP standard pressure rounds when I get the chance.
