View Full Version : Why 10mm?
Am looking at getting something for range use and want to get something different to everyone else at my local range. Most guys who shoot glocks there use the 17 and i was looking at a G20 10mm.
Can anyone give me some reasons why this would be more fun than the normal G17? I haven't shot one before but the 17 was nice to shoot. Anything I should look to get if i do get a G20?

A G20 is afun gun to shoot. The only bad part is the ammunition is expensive if you do not reload, which in my opinion makes it a poor range gun. Other than that I can think of no drawbacks.
Yeah i have recently started reloading 9mm so getting the setup for 10mm would be possible. I have heard that you can make some pretty impressive 10mm loads which appeals to me also.
Being in New Zealand has its drawbacks, one of them being if i do order one it will take 3 months to arrive!(thanks US state dept) So in the mean time i could get set up for reloading the 10mm.
I currently use ADI powders, not sure if you get them in the USA does anyone know a good bullet combo for those?

I don't mean to hijack this post, but I'm curious as to why the US State Department would make it harder for you to get a Glock in New Zealand?
By the way, the G20 is a lot of fun to shoot!
Sometimes the state dept takes ages to process the permits neccesarry for us to import to NZ. I just wish they could turn it around in a week instead of 4 weeks thats all...just havin' a *****.
I looked at the reloading info for 10mm and it looks really cool! So many combos for hot loads and massive velocities!

Don't forget the potential for a massive fire ball with a bunch of Blue Dot and a 135 g. bullet!
Haha I am looking forward to some seriously kick ***** ammo! As usual the range i shoot at is full of 45 ACP hardcore, so I am sure they will be keen to have a go.
Im going to really push the 10mm and hopefully more people will pick it up, heck- id even reload ammo for people if they got one!
Glock says it all on their website:
Maximum ballistic performance and maximum penetrative power. The ultimate force.
"Why 10mm?"
Why not? Especially outside the USA where it's certain to be a non-miltary cartridge.
Many countries - even the semi-free ones - ban or severely restrict the private ownership of firearms (handguns & rifles) chambered for recognized (i.e., NATO-type) military cartridges, e.g., 9mm; 7.62, etc.
At least with respect to semi-auto pistols, this makes the 10mm AUTO a very attractive choice. It offers both decent magazine capacity and serious stopping-power in a non-military round. It's apparently popular in Mexico, as Colt Delta Elites bring a premium there.
It can also serve as an adequate handgun-hunting round for animals up to deer-size game, although it's also put down black bear here in the USA with the proper bullet configuration. (See Double Tap Ammo for their 10mm "hunting" loads).

Yeah! I never thought of that before! Good point. Certainly better than 380ACP thats for sure haha.

why would you be importing it from the USA vsr AUS where it's made at?

Yep good point glocks that are assembled in the US at Georgia are not to be exported at all, everywhere else in the world gets glocks direct from Austria hence the test fire markings. Not sure uf NZ get glocks from the distributor here in Australia i did hear that once.
No the dealer here in Nz buys from the US - which is why we need a permit to export the firearms to NZ. Its a shorter distance and cheaper to buy from the US because the market for firearms is bigger.

Friend of mine who used to load 10mm in a glock 20 (here before we were restricted to .38cal) used to use ADI AP70 using a coated lead 175gn SWC hed load it to 6.3gn and using a coated FP 200gn hed use 5.8gn thats using a standard primer, worked well in IPSC.

Got a picture of the glocks he brings in? im sure youll find there not from the US they have different markings, all glocks sales in the US are done from Glock Inc. there not allowed to exported. Thered be an importer in NZ that brings them in from Austria via a sale in Hong Kong (pacific, Australiasia office is there)

No way jose! Australia only gets the G17A I thought, because of the barrel restrictions - right?
In NZ we can get anything with a barrel over 4". The laws here are much better than in Australia....thats one thing you cant take from us! haha!
P.s. Pavlova was ours, but you can keep Russel Crowe!

we can get the 34 aswell and the 35 with a 357 barrel or a 31 with an extended barrel
i could care less really ive owned a 23,23C,22 even a 3inch .44mag ive done more than my fair share of shooting :)
Yeah mate just havin a dig...We import from a supplier in the states. I do not know the particulars of where the guns are made (Austria i should think-being a glock) but they do come from the USA. A NIB G20 10mm costs about $1195 NZD....well thats what i just paid anyway.
Thanks for all your comments guys.

Heres something i just found out from the distributor of glock here in Austraila looks like your glocks do go through NIOA trading. Even though we are restricted here they can still stock whatever type of glock they want so im betting your model 20 came straight from there.
Nioa Australia is a wholly privately owned company that has been wholesaling firearms and firearm related products in Australia for over thirty years. Employing over twenty staff, the company is the largest privately owned company of its kind in the greater Australasian region.
The company employs four full time sales representatives to service Australia and New Zealand. These representatives have a regular call cycle visiting large commercial dealers monthly and other dealers bi-monthly. A Law Enforcement and Military Sales Manager is also employed to service government departments. This includes monthly visits to various agencies around the country.
Nioa Australia services three distinct markets in Australia and New Zealand, and in some cases, the Pacific region.

Sig_NZ:
How are the gun laws in New Zealand? What kind of restrictions are there?
The only restrictions per say are:
Barrel length has to be over 4" for any pistol
Pistol must be used for sporting purposes eg ISSF or IPSC etc.
No mag restrictions which is good though! I have a 35 round mag for my 9mm P226 Sig Sauer which is great fun!
You cannot carry any pistol in public. You can only use pistols at a certified club range. You are required to pass a Range Officer test before being able to shoot at the range by yourself.
You must store your firearms in a certified pistol safe. This has to be 6mm thickness all around and must be dynabolted into the floor/concrete and secured to the wall as well.

Just found out today glocks that go to NZ do come through NIOA trading, didnt make sense to me with the pricing - a glock 20 in the US comes to $505 thats $731 NZdollars meaning youd be getting ripped off $465 compared with the pricing here for a glock 20 which is about $1050 converts to $1189 NZ
and like i said Glock Inc. dont export Glock G.E.Smbh out of Austria only do so through there agents.
Its not exactly as simple as that. Firstly the G20 is a special order gun here in NZ as no one stocks it (or shoots it for that matter).
Hence it is a little more than the standard 17 etc.
Second, you need to work in costs like shipping - which they dont charge in the US because as you said they make their own ones there.
Third, as I said in a previous post, the market for fireams in the US is HUGE so pricing there will always be cheaper for the same item -its just economies of scale. Its not really apples with apples.
Regardless of specifics or opinions or dealers or who is correct-
I am really looking forward to when it arrives, i have all the reloading kit set up on my dillon press now so I'm all set! yeeha!

Well i cant see it being allowed ask anyone on here who knows alot about exporting/licensing/sales glock Inc. cant move guns offshore
You could be right i doubt it though
One way to know for sure
take a pic of the markings when you get it one below the extractor and one below that of the frame
then well know for sure :wavey:

My gf lived in NZ for two years. It really does sound like a beautiful place. Plus I've seen the Lord of the Rings trilogy, which apparently was filmed there.
We have talked of visiting NZ some time. She used to live in Wellington. Do you have any tips for a firearms enthusiast visiting NZ? Any cool factory tours, or good places to shoot/gun shops or museums in Wellington or surrounding areas?
perhaps check out the links below.
I dont live in wellington so I am not familliar with the ranges around there etc.
There is the war museum in Waiouru if you dont mind a 3 hour car ride to the central plateau-from wellington - (where the volcanoes are etc) it a beautiful place out there.

Congrats nz. Guarantee that once you show up at the range and start lighting some 10mm fireballs, all of your friends will be ready to trade in their Glock 9mm's.;)

I think in NZ the .45 auto is alot more popular, i was talking to a guy here in Aus who casts and coats lead projectiles (commercially) he says most of the stuff he sells to NZ is .45cal stuff, ive heard western action match is popular there too.
Sig_NZ you should try some 200gn flat nose outta the 10mm i used to use em in the .40 which worked pretty nice but with a bit more speed from the 10mm theyll be even better  try 5.8gn of AP70 if you have some.
wow thats a cooking load! I have already made up some 180 grain JHP ammo that is 6.0 grains out of a maximum 6.4 AP70....so that should be comfortably over 1300fps haha....really looking forward to 'lighting the fires and kickin' the tires.."
I got so caught up in the whole glock process i went out and got a G19 the other day...the dark side is strong!

The 10mm is a nice balance between power and portability. Magnum-level performance from a semi-auto, some with high capacity.
The G20 is a great balance of weight, accuracy, and capacity. While lackluster in appearance, it is a no-nonsense firearm.
For something more unusual at the range, get a Bren Ten, or if that's too high for the budget, my favorite 10mm is actualy the Star Megastar in Starvel finish. It is a hefty gun but has unusual shape, contour, and lines that almost always draws interest at the range.

Haha yeah its a good place to be, getting more expensive all the time to live here because everyone wants a piece of paradise. There was a thing on the news last night saying its the second (Auckland City) most expensive place to buy a home (relative to the annual income of its residents) in the world which is scary.
I can understand how you feel though, I remember flying into LA last october and thinking how could people live there///its good to be down here in little NZ where where nobody give a rats a** about us. Ive been here all my life and compared to the rest of the world that I have seen (Europe, Pacific Is, Austalia and Parts of the US) I dont think I'll be leaving!
Funny also because almost every thread i start here on glocktalk ends in people asking me about NZ and or the gun laws we have etc.

Yeah it is a hot load that one just make sure you use coated lead, i used to use bare lead in my glocks for years but i think coated is alot easier to clean. The guy i knew that was using that load was putting through his Delta elite so im not sure how the glock will handle it, maybe try 5gn to start off.
Yeah glock 19 is nice bit of gear too i had 2 of em one was a 2nd gen other was a pretty new 3rd gen, they where the best sized 9mm around i think. Worked great on goats, roos, wild puppies etc
