You should post this in the Caliber Forum!

I once had a Remington Mountain Rifle chambered in .257 Roberts. I mounted a Nikon 2-7x on it, and it made a nice lightweight Wisconsin whitetail rifle. It shot really well with the lighter bullets and IMR 4350 powder. I still have the Nikon, but I sold the rifle.
I regret it sometimes, but the short action was really limiting. To get the best accuracy, I often had to seat the bullets longer than the magazine box would allow. I shot three deer with the rifle before parting ways.
I want another lightweight rifle like that, but I will probably go with a 7mm caliber of some sort next time.

I am going by memory and not looking in any books but I think the 257 Roberts is a necked down 7mm Mauser. The Hornady Light Magnum 117 grain loading is not to far behind a standard 25/06 in energy. It would make a very good deer load.
