Hi folks,

I'm trying to find some good 230 grain +P loads. Starline manufactures +P rated brass and of course 45 Super. I'm not sure I want to toy around with Super loads if I can get a 230 grain load in +P that can rate 1000fps.

I'll be firing this out of a six inch glock 21 Longslide. Any thoughts would be great. Thanks.

You might be able to get that with a really hot regular load. I know AA#7 and Green Dot can get over 900fps with a 5" barrel with a 230gr. bullet. That extra inch should be good for about another 50 fps or so. So you will only be about 50 fps shy of your goal.

If you don't feel safe with standard brass, buy the starline +P brass and start with the starting load for those and keep ramping up the powder charge incrimentally while checking for signs of over pressure. Once they show up, back it off a tad and run them over a chrono and see you have. I did this for my .45super loads and I have a 230gr. bullet at 1200fps out of my G21L.

Comparing recoil and reliability, how is that 1200fps load out of your 21L compared to a full house 10mm? What load are you using for Super right now? My experience with the 10mm out of the longslide is that is is fairly picky about what type of bullet/spring weight is used and even then, I still get periodic Failure to feed/eject.

I plan on keeping the 10mm stuff secondary in this gun and use it for hunting and fun factor. After having this same rig set up for 45, it is completely reliable. I probably had 300 rounds down the tube yesterday using an LWD barrel. No problems at all and regular 230 grain ball was like shooting a 9mm.

Thanks much.

It recoils quite a bit (sorta like a full house 10mm out of a stock Glock 20). I don't shoot much .45super out of it, I just do it every ow and then for fun. The rounds do like to nose-dive every now and then with the .45super for some reason. With regular .45acp it is much more reliable. As for my .45super load(s) I use 230gr. rainier bullets because I am cheap and use it for my .45 plinking and bowling pin loads and Power Pistol powder because I have load data for it and my brother likes it for his 10mm. So really I have only tried different powder charge weights of that combination.

BTW with regular 230gr. ball how far is the brass being thrown. I had to go all the way down to a 11lb. spring to get it reliable and keep it from throwing brass at my face. Even with a 14lb. spring it would occasionally not exctract and rechamber the empty case (not enough slide energy to fully cycle). That got irritating at bowling pin matches.

Standard 45 230gr Ball brass is being thrown between 3 and 5 oclock positions, though not very far. Not straight back like the hot 10mm loads. Although a surprise, I am currently using a 15 pound ISMI spring on a non-captured steel rod. The brass only goes about 2 to 3 feet so I'm going to try a 13 pounder next to see what happens.

Who is the manufacturer of your barrel?

Based upon what you have said, I may just purchase +P Starline brass and bump the load up to around 1050 or so out of the six inch barrel. That alone would make energy in the mid-500s with a really big piece of lead behind it. Plus it is a very easy recoiling load out of this pistol.

If you can find it Federal HST +P will rock your world. The standard HST round is good, too.

Try Streichers. They have it for good prices.

$19.00 for 50 rounds.

Or here: http://www.gtdist.com/ProductDetail.aspx?PartNumber=FC-PXXHSTX

for $16.00

Are you talking handloads or factory loads? Mike at DT makes up some pretty hot 45 acp ammo that is under +P rating.

I like BlueDot for heavy 45 loads. The Speer manual lists a 200 grain load with a max charge of 10.5 grains Blue Dot and CCI300 primers that I've tried in a 4" CQB (1,058 fps). Pretty hot but still manageable... and also not a +P load.

You'd have to work up a load for 230 grain bullets and BlueDot.
