View Full Version : Hi Kahr Owners
I have a gun that has a similar size barrel as yours.
An XD-9 SubCompact.
My barrel is 3.1"
I don't see many people in here using the Gold Dot 124+P' Short Barrels.
In fact I see many more people using 147's.
Why is that?
Many say anything that's using 147 should be at least 4" barrels or more.
I am currently using Gold Dot 124 Standard Pressure.
I do have a box of 147 Golden Sabers hanging around though.
Do you think I would get better performance from these?
What's your opinion?
Hi Kitty
I would say your using as good a round as any out there. As I'am
sure you know putting them where you want them to go is the most important thing. So welcome and good luck with your little jewel.
Unfortunately, there's not an abundance of data on real world shootings against real humans using 3" barrels. So how these various loads will actually perform from short barrels is something of a mystery.
With that said, I think any of the modern hollowpoints is probably just as good as another. Whatever shoots the straightest and most reliably for you is the way to go. I like +P loads in my PM9 simply to make up for some of the velocity lost due to the shorter barrel. I base that on nothing scientific, just personal preference.
Gold Dot Short Barrel would probably be a good choice, as would Federal’s Tactical Bonded - Federal claims it performs well from short barrels. But HST’s, Golden Sabers, and Rangers are probably just as good too.
As far as weight, I’ve heard conflicting stories. I’ve heard 147gr is ideal for short barrels, and also 147gr is too slow from short barrels and won’t expand. So I’ll just stick with 124gr for now…. but I have been interested in trying Federal’s 135gr Tactical Bonded.
124 or 147 are excellent choices either way. Considering that shorter guns are going to be used in shorter-distance situations, I personally think the extra bullet weight is ideal.

My Kahr shoots more accuratly with Federal 147 HST right behind it is Federal 124 +P EFMJ and the last load is Federal 124 +P+ HydroShok . Thats is what works best thru mine. As far as Gold Dots they just don't group woth a crap out of my gun. I tested expansion with my loads and they expanded quite well and pentration was with in FBI testing guide lines.

I have been using 9mm Gold Dot 124 +P in my PM9 (3" Barrel), CW 9(3.5" Barrel), and Beretta Cougar (3.6" Barrel) with excellent results.

I have a CW9 and use WWB 147gr JHP's as my carry load. It is both relatively cheap, coming in boxes of 50 for around the same price or less as a box of 20 of the "premium" self defense ammo. In fact, its cheap enough to be practiced with a lot, which is a very good thing. Makes no sense to practice with cheap ball if you aren't using ball for carry.
Here is a great ammo test of the popular defense rounds. The WWB 147gr did excellent against much more expensive bullets. Great pictures too!!

I use 124 +P Speer Gold Dots in my CW9. They shoot very well and accurately. I use the Winchester 115 +P+ SXT in my Glock 17, but Kahr has not officially endorsed +p+ and the gun would kick like a mule if I shot it. The 115 gr round has a speed near a speed of a 357 magnum. No scientific basis, but I look at it as upping the weight a little to compensate for the lower speed, but still have a high velocity bullet. The 147 seems to be much slower if I remember the data correctly.
