If I choose to shoot corrosive ammunition in a surplus rifle how long do I have to clean the barrel?
What do I need to use as a slovent?
Do you clean the gun at the range or at home?
Clean it as soon as possible. Rate of corrosion depends primarily on the humidity as the salts suck moisture out of the air.
Last time I fired KA headstamp in my M1, ('mildly' corrosive primers,) I used ammonia water (Windex equivalent) to flush the barrel at the range and a full cleaning as soon as I got it home.
Lets face it, two world wars were fought using corrosive primers by all sides in the conflict. The guns worked. I don't know what the frequency of cleaning was in the infantry during those times, I would guess it varied considerably.
I have a 1903 Springfield with a 'frosty bore.' It was that way when I bought it. I have fired everything from ball to tracer through it and cleaning was erratic since I didn't even know about the corrosive issue at the time. The rifle is still very accurate. It just doesn't have a shiny bore.

I've not yet shot corrosive but have read dozens of threads on what to do. Use water to clean it out first before solvents. Many say that the ammonia in windex is not ness., it supposedly helps clean out copper though. Whatever the case, it works fine since it has water in it. Some folks carry some to the range.
