I picked up some(1,200 rds) of Bulgarian 7.62 X 54R at a show this past weekend and cracked open the case tonight. First package I pulled out and opened up looks good except 1 of the rounds has a split neck. I pulled the bullet out to examine it and its a hollow base design which is kinda interesting

The head stamp is as follows

*
3 10
52

anybody shoot this stuff before? run into problems?

Upon opening a few more 10rd packages I found more split necks...Looks like this might be stuff to stay away from

I've fired Bulg, Romanian, Hungasrian and Czech and haven't had problems with any of them aside from the occasional split. I'm glad you inspected your ammo, way too many people don't and just shoot it up. Good luck with it and let us know how it goes.

I bought a case of the same ammo about 12 years. The projectile is typical for X54R light ball. I used to pull the projectiles from this ammo and reload them with SP's for hunting. I found the powder charges were very consistent +/- .2 grains. It has proven to be one of the most accurate surplus I've found.

None of my ammo has split cases. Is the neck split or just the case mouth? A split case mouth is nothing to worry about. A split neck is another story.

It seems to be just from the shoulder forward on most but it does extend down to the case shoulder on one. Looks like it might have been caused by the way they annealed the brass. Shouldnt hurt anything on a MN I would think.
