I have shot a few AR's with cans and always got gas in the face. Can this be solved by a smaller gas port or is it just a problem that comes with cans?

The can causes back pressure and the easier way for the gas out is by the charging handle.
You can get a PRI Gas Buster charging handle for ~$90 which will vent the gas to the side.
Others have had success with putting a little bit of silicon glue around where the charging handle meets the Upper. You don't want to cake it on, just a fine bead that makes a stronger seal. When done properly the CH is fully functional and the particulates in the face is reduced.

I use a 308 silencer, AACs 2007 product line claims less gas in face design, SRT has always advertised his unit as less gas in face.
The PRI gasbuster charge handle or battlecloth velcro on deflector can help.
