I just picked up a Win 97 made in 1899 in pretty rough shape (for less than a new Chicom fake) and the wood looks original, unfortunately, the forearm wood is cracked thru in 4 spots and the butt stock is cracked where it meets the metal. I bought it to shoot cowboys and indians but I hate to use it too much for fear the cracks and splits break the forearm apart. Does anyone have any good ideas on how to stabalize the wood and reduce the chance of it breaking? I have used superglue sucessfully on smaller cracks and I read somewhere someone had used gorilla glue to repair old stocks. Any ideas will be appreciated.
Check at www.brownells.com They may have some info on stock repair. I too have a 97. It was my Grandfathers bird gun. My Dad sent it several years ago to a close friend of his that ran the Winchester factory just to have a few worn parts replaced. When we got the gun back it looked like a brand new gun. I still have it. At lot of guns come and go through my hands. This one has a permanent home.
Check Ebay. I just looked and there are plenty of Win 97 parts, including new and used barrels, stocks, foreends and sets.
