When I was in the Army (yeah yeah I know) We had "correspondence courses" on tons of military subjects. The more you had completed the better your chance of promotion to NCO.

Does the Marine Corp have anything similar?

Is there anything else a young grunt can do to expedite promotion (other than stay squared away)?

How Marine Cutting Scores are computed. (http://usmilitary.about.com/library/milinfo/blmarineprompoint.htm)

They do have something simliar, called MCI's, or Marine Corps Institue courses. They cover a variety of subjects from basic finance and math to things like the NCO course required for promotion to E-6. Each one you complete (up to a certain point) add points towards promotion, and look good when you go before a promotion board. There are also subjects based on your MOS that can be helpful.

Civilian college classes can also add points to your cutting score, but I think the education points max out at 90.

IIRC the MCIs are worth 15 each.
