View Full Version : Saiga .308 as MBR
I acquired a Saiga in .308 at a recent gun show and I am very impressed. It is very smooth shooting and accurate, and will eat anything.
My question is why in the world would anyone pay for a CETME or especially an HK91 type rifle when the Saiga is more accurate, more reliable, and will shoot any ammo? I had a CETME (same design as the HK/PTR 91) and those rifles will not reliably shoot commercial ammo due to the fluted chambers. Surplus military ammo has pretty much dried up. I haven't scoped my Saiga yet but I can already tell its more accurate than my CETME and tales of 1-1.5" accuracy are common. It's an AK so reliability is a non-issue. Optics mounting is also a non-issue. Now for the kicker - M14 mags with a little modification will work in these things so inexpensive high caps are available if you want them.
Looking for a .308 MBR? Why look any further or pay several times the price? Mine was $330.
What mods to the the mag?

The M-14 won't work in 308 Saiga. The 308 Saiga mag is tapered at the front. There were a couple of people trying get M-14 mags to work but it requires extensive mods. The M-14 magazine can more easily be made to work in the 308 Vepr as it has a more standard magazine design. You can remove some plastic from the bottom of the 208 Saiga magazine follower and gain one or two more cartridges. Some people claim they get 10 rounds in them. The Saiga 208 magazine also has a feed ramp or cartridge lift at the front. It doesn't interchange with the more conventional Vepr magazine.

I've seen those before. That's a lot of cutting and mods to th magazine. The follower hangs out the front and the front is raised above the magazine body like the Saiga magzine. That acts as a bullet guide.Even when done properly it's not as reliable as less modified M-14 and Galil magazines in the 208 Vepr.
I see what you mean DC about the taper too. I'd have to dremel the front edges of the mag well to make it fit and I'm not sure I want to do that. Wonder why they didn't mention having to do that in the post? :headscratch:
I posted asking the question we'll see what they say.

I've seen those. At least they aren't too expensive. Not sure how well the plastic will hold up.They are about as long as 30 round steel mags. That's a lot hanging out the rifle.I stocked up on factory magazines.I might get one of those to have around but that's a whole lot sticking out the bottom of the rifle. :)
I have other 308 rifles. The main thing I like about the Saiga is it's price.

Those things are $50 a piece. I spent $7 on this M14 mag, lol. I want several so it would make it worth my while to get the M14s to work if possible.

I've paid $40 for factory Saiga mags when they difficult to find.Yeah the M-14 mags can be found for cheap and so can G-3 mags. The G-3 mags are too wide and like you I don't care to modify the receiver.

The Saiga mags can be made to take 10 rounds and they stay nice and short.
So what higher cap mags can you use for a Saiga 7.62x39?
AK?

You can modify the rifle to take standard AK mags or you can buy modified AK mags to fit the 7.62x39 Saiga. To be legal you'd need to change enough parts to meet 922r.
