View Full Version : solution for shooting 1 bullet after repair
Hi,
I am looking for a solution (DIY) that I can shoot 1 bullet, after I clean my G19 (full strip, not only field strip). I want to make sure that my G19 is fully functional, before I take it out for self defense.
I can NOT shoot it outside, so I need a 'home' solution, that will be SAFE and QUITE.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Sasha

If you cant detail strip your gun, and put it back together without knowing you did it correctly, you shouldnt be doing it in the first place. If put back correctly, there is no reason to assume that it wont function properly.
I agree with your approach 100%. There is no doubt of me not being sure about the functionality of my G19 after I assemble it.
I was just looking for an idea, if anyone has it.
thanks
I imagine a plywood box with 10-12 phonebooks for a backstop. I don't know what you can get for sound deadeners, but several inches of foam in front of the muzzle would collect and slow the sound down to a mild level.
Sound deadening will be your biggest obstical. Products like fatmat or dynamat will not absorb the sound and that is what you need.

do not fire your gun in your home. if you didnt have a place to test your gun after disassembly, you shouldnt have taken it apart.
if i were you, i would go through all of glock's recommended safety checks. that should give you a pretty good idea of whether your gun is working or not.
some important things(but not the only things) to check would be:
1. the slide lock is installed correctly.
2. all safeties are functional
3. firing pin lug and cruciform rising edge have adequate contact.
If you live in a City, it is highly probable that it is illegal to do this.
That said, if all you are wanting to do is make sure it will fire, try firing a primed case. It won't test ejection and feed, but if it fires an empty primed case any regular round should fire as well. Stuff the muzzle in an old folded up blanket to keep the noise down (a primer is louder than you'd think if you haven't fired one).

Fire a casing that has only a primer, no powder or bullet. This is still pretty loud so make sure you do it in a sound deadening box and do not point it at anything that may break.

That's what I was thinking. Make sure to feed the case into the chamber at an angle and close the slide on it slowly so the extractor doesn't have to jump over the rim.
Point it into a bunch of crumpled up newspapers or something. (Wait, that might start a fire...probably not.)
This isn't a complete solution but you could drop a pencil down the barrel and hold the weapon up. Pull the trigger and the pencil should jump from the impact of the striker.
Good way to test any weapon.

I have watched my gunsmith do that on several occasions.

The pencil idea is best.
FWIW guys, if you didn't notice where the gent's from..
Israel FORBIDS RELOADING..he probably has no components & would have to dismantle a live round to try the primer.
I wince, thinking of all of the once fired brass in various calibers just left lying on the ground, going to waste, forbidden to be picked up & re-loaded.

that is correct uncle albert.... no reloading in Israel

What is the reasoning behind that law?
I am not sure what is behind it... probably some kind of gun control. BEsides that, you can only shoot on a formal range that is approved by the ministry of interior.

Hello Sasha,
Simple enough, Make a discharge barrel...
1. Get a large 55 gal metal drum with lid.
2. Build a cradle for drum with 2x4's Give barrel an angle of about 30 degrees +/- to your liking.
3. Cut a large access in the lid fill it with sand (or water). Leave enough space in the barrel so you can present your muzzle inside it for firing. Aim to center of material and fire. You can also use sandbags inside the barrel.
Make sure to wear eye and ear protection. It will be loud and will be as safe as you choose to be.
FWIW...
Shalom

can you buy a threadded barrel and suppressor?
then use the sand/water "catcher" - if need to carry uninstall the suppressor and put thread protector on barrel for carry
suppresor is not legal around here
