Had the DE out Sat. doing some scouting of a new property that I am considering leasing for a hunting club.
From the ATV trail, had walked down on the edge of an old cedar swamp that was fairly open. Heard what sounded like splashing in the water and looked up to see 5 or 6 hogs coming towards me in 8(or so) inches of water. The last one of the bunch was good size.
Moved into position to intercept them when they came "ashore". Couldn't get any closer than 40 yards so took a position behind a rather large cypress knee. Used that for a rest and waited. They were strung out but one by one they came ashore 40 yds from me. As the last one(biggest of the bunch) touched dry land I let loose with the best grunt that I could muster up. The hog slammed on the brakes and looked around. I immediately sent a 300gr. Hornady XTP on its way. The hog dropped in its tracks. The XTP had hit the hog just forward of the front shoulder,a little low. The impact had severed the spine and exploded the heart.
Put the sow on the scales when I got back home and she weighed 170 pounds, field dressed.
My DE has accounted for lots of game over the years. Every time I think of selling it,it puts more game in the freezer. Will probably own the old(MK 1)DE 'til I die. But that's ok,after owning it for 15 or 16 years,it's just gettin' broke in.
