This is my Torch Red 04 SVT Cobra.
After doing the mods, it was tuned by Modular Depot to the tune of 687 RWHP. Driving this car is the most fun you can have with your clothes on! This spring I plan on putting a 150Hp shot of N2O on it!
Can't wait!

Thats a sweet notch! i like the Cobra R wheels on foxes. I love those fox notches. i always wanted to find a clean one and put a turbo'd 331 in it! i have had a few foxes, all hatches though. i still have an 84 GT that has been in storage for 8 years...need to roll up my sleeves and get 'er done. i plan on putting a nitrous'd 331 with a c4 auto in it. i plan on letting my son bracket race it when he comes of age, so i have a few years to get it ready for him...lol.
by then that will give me 2 years to turn the wifes old 95 v-6'er into a bracket car for my daughter...the fun never ends, does it?

I wish I could afford a stang project car (and the project itself), but they are WAY out of my budget.

They wouldn't stand a chance at his power level until 4th gear, and even then he probobly rolls into it.

And if it does hook (with slicks), he's got his clutch, rear diff, and axle shafts to worry about. Beefy parts are available to cure all that though, all it takes is $$$.

Sweet Cobra and great pics!!

the Nitto's want no part of the torque that this car cranks out. they try, but it is very tricky to get them to hook at all. the bfg's drag radials i had before this hooked better, but didnt handle as well as these do. how did you you know? Kenne bell baby!

'Cause thats the best and easiest way to make big power in those cars, the twin screw upgrade. A little nitrous to cool the intake charge is great too!

You must the level-five half-shafts and all that right?

Is whatever clutch your using actually streetable?

Ron3

BigBadStang
02-24-2007, 20:57
Yeah, DSS level 5 shafts(good to 900 RWHP), upgraded to "mega hard" control arm bushings to kill the wheel hop that helped break the last shaft (should have just bought the level 5's the first time!). DSS aluminum driveshaft. right now it has 4:30 gears in it, but i am thinking of dropping to a 3:73 to help the Nittos do their job a bit better.

the clutch is a RAM dual disc unit and aluminum flywheel that is really smooth. it has a 900ft.lb rating, but it is amazingly streetable. I had a Fidanza in it for about 2 weeks...i hated it, couldnt get used to it. granted the RAM was 2 times as much $$, it is worth every dime when sitting in traffic.

yeah ive heard the bfg's stick better at the track but done ride as well and dont get the mileage of the nitto's. so alot of guys give up some traction for driveablity. i work for discount tire co.

I worked there through the last two years of high school. I liked my managers and they treated me great (free Hooter's chicken wing night every month which was called a "meeting"). I quit because I was burnt out on it and some new supervisors were a-holes and my friends were being sent to other stores.

i think you will be happy with the BFG's. they do hook harder. seems like they "squirm" a bit more in the corners though (thats why i went with the nittos).

I don't have a Mustang, but I work for a Mustang magazine, and the NMRA. :wavey:

I'd say for maximum hook in a radial, the M/T ET Street Radials are the way to go, but their street life is weak. They hook so hard they were outlawed in our Drag Radial class...

which Mag do you work for?
i have heard the M/T's are a brutal hooking street tire, but they handle only slightly better than a regular slick. hell if you look at them, they look like slicks with a couple of rain grooves in them!

btw....NMRA rocks!
i've been to a few of your events and absolutely loved it! cant wait to get back this summer!

Cool! That's always great to hear! I work for Race Pages Magazine, which is the "Offical Magazine of the NMRA."

From everything I've heard about the M/Ts is that they really are just slicks with a couple grooves. Most of our Drag Radial guys didn't want them in the class, surprisingly, because they were too easy to hook on. But from what I've heard from Nitto, they are revamping their drag tire lineup and probably coming out with a new "competition" radial. The new Nitto slick should be out soon, too.

The only ones? Why's that? There are blower kits for all of them. Nitrous too. It's the supporting mods that really cost the big money.

Blower kits, especially the good ones, are fairly expensive....and doing nothing but adding a blower doesn't equate "wicked" power. Exhaust and pulley swap is all the 03-04 Cobras need.

As I stated, no other stangs make "wicked power so easily". Few cars do.

I guess the real question is, what do you consider "wicked" power and what do you consider easy?

Exhaust and pulley swap is easy. Adding a blower to a car that is currently naturally aspirated is not. I am not counting nitrous. It makes great power and can be easy to install but is temrporary and needs to be refilled...different category.

Wicked power....probably 500rwhp or more.....although the definition changes based upon the weight of vehicle. Put 300 rwhp in a Miata, and you got my attention.

Add a pulley, idler pulleys (because the factory ones suck and to increase belt wrap), get a custom dyno tune, another belt (most of the time) and you'll be up to $1200 real quick.

And thats for just an upper pulley change, which will give you up to 50hp and about the same torque. With an aftermarket intake and exhaust this can put you near 500 crank hp.

Near and certainly after 500hp you'll peg your mass air meter. Now you'll need more programming and more fuel. This could mean a boost-a-pump, MAfia Extender, and different spark plugs at the least.

If you change the lower pulley as well, or add nitrous, or port the blower, or go to a twin screw you'll probobly need larger fuel injectors and more fuel pump. You will definatly need cooling mods, these aren't cheap.

If you do add just a small upper pulley you'll just make your traction problems worse. A stock Terminator on a cool day with street tires will not have traction in 1st or 2nd gear. It will be even worse with another 50-60lb ft of torque.

So you can run sticky tires right? Yes, and you'll soon be buying a clutch and a rear diff cover unless you uprade them ahead of time.

If your talking about road course stuff adding boost is an even worse idea. These cars need extra cooling stock to run well on a road course. Stock you either have to run a cool lap for every couple hot laps or it'll go into limp mode. More boost and you would be a fool not to do some moderate cooling mods.

It's never as cheap and easy as people want to believe. Every mod is re-engineering a comprimise.

There is a reason our '03 Cobra project car took almost a year to get to 505 at the rear wheels...

I'd prefer (and plan on persuing, if I ever get a damn Mustang) just building a big-bore 4-valve (Possibly a three-valve, after a conversation with a certain manufacter who might be looking into making three-valve stuff) motor, which would probably be over built for the power I'd plan on making, and then a Hellion Power Systems turbo kit... The project would/will take a while since I don't really plan on paying for much out of my own pocket (read: I dont have the money for a project like this, and will be relying on the kindness of sponsors and thier desire for edit), but imagine a car, that is capable of driving to the track, cranking up the boost, living through the weekend, and then driving home under it's own power.

A lofty plan, but one should have dreams, right? I need to get the Roush turbo kit installed on the Focus and finish that project before I undertake a new one, though.

I raced a 2004 Mustang Cobra the other day. Three runs from a roll, starting speeds of 40, 50, and 60 mph. He has a ported blower and some other small mods.

I won all three. (cammed/stalled LS1 F-body)

In gear acceleration was even, but you can't outshift and auto...and he certainly couldn't! Thought I'd share.

may not be able to outshift a slushbox, but the parasitic drag from one could kill ya in a race with an evenly matched car. was he granny shifting (cobra) or powershifting (if you could tell. hell...it's hard to tell most of the time when your busy in your own car! lol)? i cant powershift mine at all until the 3-4 shift. i really wish the ET streets didnt wallow around so bad, then i could get alot more traction!
what are the specs on your cam, and converter?
any other mods?

Full mod list copied and pasted:
Big mods in bold
-Jet-Hot Longtube headers
-Speed Inc 3" true duals with X-pipe, dynomax bullets, dumped at rear axle.
-Camshaft: TSP MS3 (237/242 .603/.609 113)
-SLP cold air induciton
-TSP induction lid
-LS6 intake manifold
-Ported throttle body
-SLP underdrive crank pulley
-Tranny: Twice rebuilt.
-Torque converter: Yank SS4000
-BMR Boxed, weld in subframe connectors
-Brakes: Brembo replacement rotors, Hawk HPS pads
-Rollmaster double timing chain, ported LS6 oil pump
-PRC gold dual valvesprings with Titanium retainers, chromemoly pushrods
-B&M 24k trans cooler
-TCI aluminum, finned +2 quart transmission pan
-Autometer Sport comp tranny temp gauge
-MSD ignition wires, NGK TR55 plugs
-Dyno tuned by LS1 speed
-M/T ET Street radials

My best recorded time is an 11.9 @ 113. I have a better and more efficient converter and some weight reduction since then, hoping it is an 11.7X car at this point.

I don't know how knowledgeable he is about his car and I don't know much about them myself, but others have told me I beat the driver more so than the car...which is fine...a W is a W. :)

This was one of his replies in a thread where we discussed the runs:

"Stiegemeier Stage IV, profiled and blueprinted rotors, and ported rotor case. 3.0" pulley (12-13 #s boost), still have the stock belt which causes a little slip. The whole job only adds around 25-40hp with supporting mods, you can however get 60+ with a 2.66" pulley. I was getting alot of heat lock between shifts (5500+), I was starting in 2nd at 4300 (50mph?), and it would run up the tach fast, shift at 5800, muscle it in to 3rd and would be at 3500 or so, then get on it, didnt go into 4th. The trac was on, I was thinking about taking it off on the on ramp but then we took off and that was that. From a dig with slicks ill hook real well, thats when I pulled the 12.5 in Houston. It look like you still had gear left when I was shifting, or your auto is crazy lol. Either way you still have a fast car"

Gotta have a plan. :)

When you can only (barely) afford one significant mod per year and have to do the labor yourself there is plenty of time to do research and put together exactly what you want.

What do you run?

BigBadStang
03-29-2007, 09:25
the car should be capable of running right at 10.0's. that would be with slicks of course. but with the BFG's it ran 10.69@ 132.11 mph with limited traction in 1st and 2nd.
with the Nitto's it has ran 10.83 @130.74 mph (slightly shorter tire caused the drop in mph.) with a little less traction. the car weighs 3680lbs and was last dyno'd @ 687rwhp & 702ft.lbs. torque in October.

Some mods are:
4:30 gears
MotoBlue Billet IRS cover girdle
DSS level 5 shafts (axles)
DSS aluminum drive shaft
RAM dual disc clutch and aluminum flywheel
TCI scattershield
2.6L Kenne Bell supercharger pullied for 18psi.
Methanol injection
Kenne Bell Big Oval throttle body
Modular Depot Tune
Basani Stainless mid length headers, x-pipe, mufflers and tails.
B&M pro ripper shifter
Hurst Roll control (line lock)
Kenny Brown subframe connectors, strut tower & shock tower braces
rear bushings upgraded to "mega stiff"

maybe this spring i will get a pair of good slicks and go flog it at the track and see if the driveline stays together...lol.

Here is mine. A 69 Mach 1 R code 428 CJ. I'm the second owner (bought it in 1977)and the sixth owner (bought it again in 1989). Restored it from 1989 until 1994. This picture was taken in 1997 at a show at Charlotte Motor Speedway (Lowe's). Its mostly a garage queen now. Over the years, I gotten so busy with work and kids, I've put it on the back burner. Still gotta love the looks of a 69. Even my die-hard Chevy friends love the 69 Mustang.

I have a R302 block 347 with TEA 225cc Trickflow highports, I had a Jerico DR4 but I sold it for some quick cash to pick up an enclosed trailer that I got a great deal on. Looking around for a deal on a G Force GF5R (wishful thinking), probably just going to get another Jerico DR4 though.

1999 Mustang with the 35th anni package. She just turned 60k this month! Mostly stock, as far as I can tell anyways, except for the exhaust which is going to change again as it is way too loud at cruising speeds.

Her name is Jessica, and I picked her up last June as a gift to myself for getting a promotion.

This year I'll probably get a tuner, and I have a 5 year plan for a Kenne Bell twin screw with a goal of 400 rwhp. I'd love to hit 500rwhp, but I don't want the headaches.

get a solid foundation to build performance on and have a plan. nothing sucks more than having to change directions in the middle of a build and taking a beating on buying and selling parts. good luck, and above all....have a blast!

 Thanks!

I can't decide if I want to buy a new block and build it up, or just put the twin screw on top of the stock block. That's pretty much the only part of my plan I can't make a decision on.

if you are serious about pushing the 500 hp mark, i would strongly advise going to CHP,or sean hyland for at least a short block with the good parts inside(steel crank, top quality pistons and hd rods). it doesnt cost that much more to get a slight stroker...i think they make 5.1 out of the 4.6's. that will certainly help w/o having to put the engine on the ragged edge to get your goal. at that hp level, cam swaps, and porting the heads will help tremendously too!
keep us posted!!

i know the 10's really look great, but yours is the first i have seen with 11's. the cars look killer with the huge rubber on the rear, it really "stuffs" the wheelwells, especially on the sn95 cars. it does away with the tire to 1/4 panel gap that the cars have when stock.

looks killer man!

Dad bought the car for me when I was 12. We got it road worthy together, and it was my daily driver for 3 years till I bought the Jeep. Right now its a 200 inline six, but I have a 289 that I've been waiting to drop in. Going to do a full resto-mod. I want to keep the original look of the car, but moderinize the interior (shave door handles, disc brakes, all new electric, etc.) It just takes time and $$$.

Wheels are going to stay in the 15 - 16" range. And something that fits the car. I'm not about the "bling". ;)

Acutally I'm a member of the GoodGuys Rod and Custom, and go to several shows each year. Its a great way to get ideas and see what others have done. I've met several people, many of who will whoop my rear a good one if I don't stay true to the car! But that is also what I like about it. I like it the way it is. I just want to make it a little "smoother".

Yeah,,I got a 69 Mach 1 428 SCJ.It's black/black and has a shaker and a four speed. This car is almost original too.I have added a MSD Digital ignition and an old Ford Quadraphonic out of a 74 Lincoln.I drag it with Nitto drag radials and it's got a set of Weld drag-lite wheels on it then.A half hour I can change it over to the original type bias ply tires and steel wheels it came with. The paint is pretty good for a 40,000 mile car,but the red stripes are faded pretty bad.The original comfort weave seats are perfect,as is the fold-down rear seat.I rarely talk about the car so you guys are some of the first ones to hear of it,outside of my co-workers and my neighbor I go shooting with.Oh the only thing I did to the car I thought hard and long about is.I drilled holes in the roof to install a rear window louver.Only the Boss cars and Shelby's got those in 1969.But so many people are use to seeing a 69 with em I gave in,along with the rear deck spoiler.Hell I own this car,it don't own me.Most likely the next guy who gets it will be cussing me for drilling those holes,as these cars are pushing 100 big ones. It's not even that fast.It takes the quarter in high 13's and low 14's,but it's a helluva rush for a 50 year old to relive his youth with.I also installed a drive shaft loop drilling a few more holes.Small price to pay when you think about what a broken drive shaft does,,,sometimes a car will flip over and all hell breaks loose.I wont drill anymore holes in the car now.I've done enough damage for this one time drag raceing machine.I guess I'm lucky no one has installed tubs or a roll cage.
Here's Black Sabbath before the louvers and rear spoiler

Nice Mach!

You aren't still running the stock 3.55's are ya?

Those 4-valves need more gear. 4.10's are best all-around. You'll really enjoy them, even when your not putting it to the floor. At 80mph you'll be around 2850rpm in 5th. It's not bad at all.

If it's just a toy and don't do much interstate travel, 4.30's. If was just a drag strip toy and you run 28 inch tall slicks 4.56's would be your thing. Provided you plan to stay NA of course.

Either way you'll need a speedcal ($100) or you can use a SCT-type tuner if you don't already have one.

Thank You. It's not a 1/4 mile'r, but it has mid 9 sec capability with slicks and & little steeper gearing. 355's are whats in it to take advantage of all the TQ.

BTW BigBadStang, I'm surprised you're running a stock block with that kinda HP. I'd lay decent odd's that it wouldn't make 6 full on passes down the track without the bottom end letting loose. Those stock blocks are not near as strong as many think (even for a 6 bolt). I've seen many let go with far less HP. Out here in AZ we have an awesome dyno tuner who has also seen many go KAABOOOM while trying to tune those motors with big HP.

Some do get away with those kinda figures but it's a ticking time bomb. If you keep the rev's to a max of 5k, then it outa hold up. I'M NOT RAGGING ON YOU! Thats a very beautiful Cobra you have. I am just offering some FYI in case you aren't aware of that. My brother has an 03 10th anniv SVT Cobra. Very nice too.

Green hell, Are you running the stock block also?.

Those 03/04 Cobra's don't really need that much work to really wake them up. a good exhaust system, blower pulley change, an SCT custom chip and 475-500RWHP is there which in my 40yrs of building Stangs only, thats a nice safe HP level that will just about ruin anyone's day and the stock block can handle that safely & reliably.

Great Cars everyone
