WOW!!! Ok, this was INSANE!!!!
Results:
Favorite v. Underdog: Winner how round
Joachim Hansen v. Jason Ireland: Hansen SUB R3
No surprise here
Kazuo Misaki v. Frank "Twinkle Toes" Trigg: Trigg UD
Not a huge upset but still unexpected.
Travis Wiuff v. James Lee: Lee SUB R1
WTF!!! Lee takes this fight on 24 hours notice and wins in 39 seconds!!!
Antonio Rogerio "Minatauro" Nogueira v. Rameau Sokoudjou: Sokoudjou KO R1
Somebody with four fights and who lost to a guy who lost to Ed Herman, KOs the PRIDE number one contender, who has NEVER been KOed before? And he does it in 23 seconds!!! It isn't over yet either!
Hayato "Mach" Sakurai v. Mac Danzig: Sakurai KO R2
Danzig showed heart but was simply outclassed.
Sergei Kharitonov v. Michael Russow: Kharitonov SUB R1
No surprise, but the win was tainted by Kharitonov blatantly grabbing the glove and not the hand or wrist to secure the armbar.
Mauricio "Shogun" Rua v. Alistair Overeem: Shogun KO R1
No surprise except the fashion, diving punch from standing through Overeem's guard.
Non-Title Fight
Takanori "The Fireball Kid" Gomi
PRIDE Lightweight Champion
v.
Nick "El Diablo" Diaz
Diaz SUB R2
This was amazing. It was a total war until Diaz managed to sink in the Gogaplata submission. This was supposed to be a Gomi domination, but Diaz had other plans. This is bad PR for PRIDE though as Gomi's title was not on the line and this is the second time in one year that Gomi lost in his weightclass but kept his title. Also, PRIDE pushed Diaz as a UFC representative, that kinda bit them.
MAIN EVENT
PRIDE MIDDLEWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH
"The Axe Murderer" Wanderlei Silva
(31-6-1)
PRIDE Middleweight Champion
v.
Dan "Hollywood" Henderson
(21-5-0)
PRIDE Welterweight Champion
Challenger
This was supposed to be Silva's big American coming out party. All anybody had to know was that Henderson was Randy Couture's teammate. What PRIDE didn't mention is that this is a rematch and in the first fight, although Henderson showed glimpses of brilliance, it was a one-sided beatdown of the American wrestler. This time was a complete 180. Henderson dominated the fight on the ground and edged out the standing exchanges. Finally, landing with a spinning backfist, Henderson unloaded on Silva and KOed him. Henderson made history tonight being the first fighter in MMA history to hold belts in two different weightclasses simultaneously.
Henderson KO R3
(22-5-0)
