View Full Version : 21 as a carry gun?
So Im looking to get a carry gun, Im comfortable shooting .45 over .40 and I want a gun that will hold more than 10, and the 21 seems the only gun that would work. Does anyone here carry one on a daily basis, if so, how is it? Im not a small guy, 5'11" 200, and I usually wear sweatshirts and bigger shirts.
Thanks
I'm 6'4" and about 225 lbs. and I carry one everyday. I chose it for the same reasons; .45, high capacity, and simple to operate.
I am 6'1" and 185 lbs. I carry a 21 almost every day. I do so in a Don Hume Double Nine holster (about $45.00 at Guners Alley). With a good holster and a good belt (read a thick, stiff belt - this holds true for any holster), it is comfortable and quite concealable. I also have a 19 that I carry occasionally and, with a good set up, the 21 is just as easy to carry as the 19.
I use a Fobus single mag carrier for my spare mag, which is the standard capacity 13 rounder with a +2 base for a total of 15 rounds.
I also recommend a Brooks Tactical A Grip. They are wonderful and give you a good grip without adding any size to the grip. Dillion Precision has them for about $20.00.
If you do get a 21 you'll have a good one. I want to try the 21SF and see how different the grip feels. However, I'm happy with my 21 and really don't think I would change anything.
You have to give the big 21 a little time to get used to its grip when carried inside the pants. I'm 5'10" and 190 lbs and the 21 works well with a great holster-belt combo.
I prefer ITP for concealed carry. It hides the 21 better and tucks it in tight. My current carry setup is a HBE Leatherworks Com-3.I've worn it for a week now and really like it.
It also helps to carry lighter ammo for the X-long day. I know, I know, the 230 gr. is king. I carry 165 gr. corbon powerball to lighten the load just a little.
I'll let you know more about the Com-3 after I get it broken in.
Half the fun of concealed carry is getting set-up the way you like it so it works for you when you train and carry.

:) I'm a big guy - 6 foot and over 200#'s. My hands, however, are not overly large. I carry a G-21 everyday. (It's on the desk right next to me, now.)
I wear either a Wm. Tucker HF-1 OWB, or one of two different Blade-Tech Kydex holsters IWB. Both at 4:00. Don't feel like too much gun to me. In fact I feel naked without it.

G. Gunman. I like your grip tape setup. I have grip tape over the Glock logo area, but not where my thumb rests. I'll have to try putting some up there... Is it just me, or are Glocks slippery-when-wet! Before I put the grip tape on my G37, I could literally feel the gun falling out of my sweaty hand on every shot. As soon as I put grip tape on, it was perfect! My only problem is when I carry it, the grip tape is rough against my hip. I've had to buy holsters with that extra covering so my skin doesn't turn raw...

:) Yup, I find polymer frames to be slippery too. (And sweat is just one of the things you have to worry about!) I use skateboard tape that I got at a bicycle shop; some people like stair tread tape from a place like Home Depot.
Sometimes I'll use notebook paper to trace out the template; other times I'll use a light cotton cloth. Even though I carry IWB the tape doesn't bother my skin; it doesn't bother a cover shirt either; but, it has chewed up the inside of my M65 field jacket's winter liner.
It's been my experience that the only place you really need the tape is underneath your thumb and the latter half of your trigger finger. As long as I've got these two points on the frame covered, my grip remains the same - even during long shot strings.
If you make the template for the side without the slide stop, first, all you have to do is flip it over and make a small cutout for the SS on the other side - One template = two sides! ;)

Yep. Do so now. Carry either right or left sided. Have posted B4, right hand okay, but fits left hand better.
Six-two, 240#, no problems with CCW.
The 21 is my favorite carry of my 2 usual choices(the other is a G30 IWB). I weigh about 245# and stand 6'-3.5" and use this:

Very comfortable carry under vest, t-shirt or whatever. Easy in and out of vehicles, comfortable and secure while riding, couldn't be more pleased:thumbsup:

6'4" tall 300 lbs. I carry my G21SF plain clothes everyday. IBW holster @ 4:00 with extra mag in pocket of 511 BDU pants on duty, same location off duty with T-shirt or jacket covering.

I carry my 21SF on and off duty. Matter of fact since I got it, I haven't been without it at all. I carry it IWB using a Comp-Tac infidel. I love their stuff, plus like giving local boys my money. I am 5'6" about 170 pounds not a big person at all. It was funny when pulling it out to show some other officers I work with my SF, they were amazed I was carring it. It replaced my G23 as my duty pistol, and really the only difference I notice is the weight. It is a tad heavier, but not by an uncomfortable amount. I don't even notice it now after three weeks. The Plus side is I cut my teeth on 1911's and 45's. I love the round, and with My SF I still have 13 rounds for the bad guys. Just a 45hole lot bigger ones.
