View Full Version : Long Time Discharged
I know this may not interest most of you, but I was in the AF from 1973 to 1977. Nearly 5 years. I just wondered if any of you were in at that time. I was stationed at Hickam AFB, Hawaii.
Yes, I was there protecting all of you from another sneak attack by the Japanese. I know it was tough duty, but it was a job that had to be done.
Back in those days, they didn't think we needed much training in firearms. We shot an M-16 ONE DAY, and that was it.
I'm just trying to connect with some from my day...anyone out there?
I was in the AF from '67-'77. Stationed in Minot ND and Grand Forks ND, with a couple of side trips to Guam and Thailand.I was a crew chief on B-52's. Liked it so up here I stayed wheh I got dishchared.
i was at Grand Forks during the snow blizzard of '75!!!!
My son went to school at UND at Grand Forks in the mid to late '90s. He was there for the "Great Flood", when the Red River just about wiped out the town. I believe that was the spring of either '96 or '97, wasn't it?
I've been there for visits. Not to be rude, but I can't say I was impressed. I liked the Fargo area better. I would prefer northern MN more...my wife was born in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, which is where we were married, and some of her familiy live in Bemidji. That's just a couple hours from Grand Forks.
Me, I was born and raised in Michigan, and we still live here. Not a bad state, as long as you avoid the Southeast corner.
I'm about 20 miles from Lansing now, but I was born in the SW corner.
Actually, the nicest part of Michigan, IMO is the NW corner of the lower penninsula, near Traverse City, Charlevoix, Petoskey, etc. The UP is very nice too, but there's not a lot there. I like the hill country of the western half of it the best.
I was a C-141A Crew Chief at Norton AFB California from 1976 to 1979.
I actually spent some time at Hickam in 1978 on TDY - Hickam, Pago Pago, Christchurch, Sydney, Richmond, Woomera. I don't remember much about Hickam except that we were put up at the Outrigger and we hit way too many bars....I was the only Active with a Reserve Flight Crew!:tequila:
Passed through Hickam in 73 on my way to Udorn RTAFB, Thailand. Worked F4's. Bypassed you on the way home in 74 and worked F15's for the next 4 years.
Chanute for training winter of '76, Grand Forks '77. Retired '04.
USAF 60 to 64. Long time ago.
A fuely groundpounder. Chanute for training 1975. Reese AFB,Tx. for three years. Used to call it American Toy Company after it's real command ATC, which was for pilot training.Small T37s and T38s can do that to a person.
Fairchild AFB with SAC for 3 years. Turkey at Incirlik. And the rest at Langley AFB, Va.which also has NASA research complexes.
Got to service carts with liquid nitrogen as well as liquid oxygen. Had to ground and bond all the equipment. The static spark off walking across carpet would be enough to set things off if conditons were right. Retired 1995. :)
I was at Chanute, and Reese, and the Lick.
