looking at this verbage on the books:

North Carolina law also prohibits any person carrying a gun, rifle, or pistol into any assembly where a fee has been charged for admission

I do a lot of off-roading, and we frequent Uwharrie National Forest...they have a range on property, so guns are definitely not outlawed...you'll find guys on 4-wheeleers riding down the trails with a rifle slung over their shoulders...

we have to buy either a $5 day pass or a $35 annual pass to ride on the trails...

does that count as paid admission? you can actually ride on the trails without going through any "gate"...you'd only get busted if stopped and couldn't provide the pass...

any interpretation on this?

The rest of the law reads
"(b)his section shall not apply to the following:
(1) A person exempted from the provisions of G.S. 14‑269;

(2) The owner or lessee of the premises or business establishment;

(3) A person participating in the event, if he is carrying a gun, rifle, or pistol with the permission of the owner, lessee, or person or organization sponsoring the event; and

(4) A person registered or hired as a security guard by the owner, lessee, or person or organization sponsoring the event. (1977, c. 1016, s. 1; 1981, c. 412, s. 4, c. 747, s. 66; 1993, c. 539, s. 165; 1994, Ex. Sess., c. 24, s. 14(c).)"

So, if the owner of the establisment is aware of your firearm and grants you permission, Then you wouldn't have a problem. Then again, if everyone just rides around with their gun in the open, then just do as they do.
