I am in the process of starting a retro project..

Just thought I'd share :)

So far I've got the upper and A1 spec lower lined up. Plan to strip the complete upper down and send both receivers off to US Anodizing to be anodized(the lower is "in the white").

I'll need to locate an A1 pistol grip and A1 stock assembly, and get a set of lower parts, a bolt, carrier, and charging handle.

Hopefully have this done by June

Where did you find the A1 spec lower?

I want to do one of these myself.

Pistol grip, triangle handguards, and old-style 20-shot magazines available here:

They normally have the stocks, too, but are temporarily out-of-stock.

Heh.

Out-of-"stock". :animlol:

Currently only available "in the white".

I'm going to get one and test fit all my parts(to verify the holes are good) and then send it off to be anodized to match the upper.

I think that Nodak Spud was going to do some of those. And I know there is some tutorials on doing them yourself on AR15.com.

I had started one of these a while back. But ended up getting traded out of the upper I had for it. Couldn't turn down the offer I got for it.

This was the Upper I had I was going to use. A early 70's M16 A1 colt in 1/12 twist

Also... Norrell has a Molly Resin that is a duplicate of the Greenish tint old style M16 that will work nicely to finish both of those. 23 bucks for 8 ounces shipped (will do two guns at least). The stuff works good I know that. I have done a couple AK's and a bunch of mags with the stuff in the flat black verison.

Good tip on Moore Militaria; nice people to deal with.
Plan on getting Alumahyde II from Brownells to repaint the vintage stocks, handguards, and pistol grip. I'm doubtful that you will find any minty originals, unless price is no question. SAW, the Colt parts place, will sell you a NOS A1 buttstock for about $250....
The Alumahyde has held up well for me; Krylon Fusion will soften and degrade from oils and solvents.
Anxious to hear how the Nodak Spud lower comes out; looks good in the pics. Were they to offer it in a vintage dark grey, it would simplify things.
Good luck,

My understanding was that it was only going to be offered in Raw no finish so you could do what you wanted finish wise and match it up yourself. Again, Norrell has matching tinted finishes for that.

Their website claimed they would offer it in an anodized finish; perhaps I misunderstood what that meant.
