View Full Version : Hunting with a .45 Question
Anyone ever hunt with a .45? If so, what's the biggest game you've taken and what loads do you recommend?
I hunt with my .45 quite often. My 45-70 that is:banana:
I use a handload using either a Hornady 300gr Hollow Point or a 350gr flatnose. Both over IMR4198.
same here in a 45colt and 280grain HC lead bullet at 1100-1200fps, doubt you will get that from a 45auto if this is what your talking about ;)
killed deer/hogs with the above or similiar.
I've used a .45 Colt on deer as well.
It worked great with both 200 and 260 gr JHP's.
Guess I should have been more exact. I too have a 45-70 which I love to hunt with. But I was wondering if anyone has ever hunted with a .45 acp.
I've shot prairie dogs with one of my 1911's. If you think they come apart when hit with a .223, you really need to see what a 185 grain hollowpoint does. :supergrin:
I would have no problem shooting a deer with a .45 ACP, but it would have to be close and it would have to be broadside. I'd also want the toughest 230 grain hollowpoint I could get my hands on. I finished a downed deer with my 9mm a couple of years ago. It did enough damage to kill cleanly and quickly. I'm sure a .45 would do just fine if you put the right bullet in the right spot.
I took a small doe once with a .45 ACP during doe days as I was walking to my stand one afternoon. Ammo was 200 gr. Speer "Flying Ashtrays" IIRC.
She caught me off guard and my .308 was slung with the scope covers on. No way I could have taken a shot with the .308 and she was really close.
She ran a few feet and dropped. Again, she was small, close and I got a really clean hit on her. Pistol was a Springfield Amory duo toned Government model that I had built up with some goodies.
Not really a round I would hunt deer with. For me, I'd probably go .44 mag or a Thompson Center in a better round. My uncle has taken several with his Blackhawk in .44magnum.
food for thought;
if the 45auto was an good idea for a hunting, and since the 1911 is so widely built and accurate, than why do you not see alot of people in the field hunting with a 45auto ?
I've shot a deer with a 45 Auto but haven't "hunted" with one as in used for my primary weapon. I was taking a leak and I had my G30 on me. Deer came in close and I drew and fired.
