Why truncated cone ammo? What's the advantage? Not used for self defense I presume? More accurate? Cheaper?
thank you,

There is no real accuracy advantage. Some believe it offers more energy transfer than RNFMJ. The real purpose, especially in .357sig, 40S&W & 10mm, is to shorten the OAL of the round to allow proper feeding.

Supposed to penetrate better/straighter than round nose
They also cut a cleaner/larger hole than round nose bullets do. For defensive or hunting use, the bigger/cleaner hole lets more blood out faster, which stops the target faster.

My understanding is that it is endemic to the 40 cal. projectile. Would be to fat to function as a RN. I dunno. I am a big fan of the TC in the 22 LR. I spent a lot of time trying to come up with the best squirrel load for 22LR -- most all hollow points blew up at 50 yards and round noses did not really slow down fox squirrels. Yes, I know most of the ninjas on this board take nothing but head shots on squirrels at distances out to 150 yards. I cannot do that the way I hunt. The best cartridge in my book for a person who will eat squirrels is the Remington 22 Viper solid. Looks just like the Yellowjacket, but no hole. I think the TC cuts a big enough plug in squirrels, even the big reds, that they just want to go ahead and die rather than climb up the tree and into that knot hole and die.
Been wondering myself. Latest shipment of GA Arms 9mm 124 FMJ NATO had truncated bullets, and they appeared to be seated much deeper, but I haven't had any problems.
