My Remington 700 LSS needs to be sighted in. Surpsingly I got good results with Federal Fusion 180 gr but i cannot find it anywhere!

And I hate the whole idea of all rifles shoot differently, because i'm gonna go broke trying out different loads.

I wish they made boxes of ammo for rifles readily avaialble in 5s like shotgun shells instead of 20.

But now I'm reliant on people's word of mouth; are there any loads that people have the best luck with, factory-wise for 30-06, in 150-180 gr?

What do you plan on shooting?

New hunter, probably white tail, but i wouldn't rule out Elk in the years to come.

150-165gr generic softpoints for whitetail. (power point/corelokt)

180gr Premium for Elk (Nosler Partition/Accubond)

I've had the best luck with Hornady "Light Magnums"

It's the main reason I handload for my high power rifles. You can tune your rifle for best accuracy. There are a lot of good factory 06 loads. I would go no lighter than premium 165gr for elk. Try Rem. Ultra CL, Federal Hishok (deer) & Fed. Premium for elk.

No such thing as best nor can one pick the "best" for you.

with that said 150grain winchester should do good for WT/ELk and numerous other picks between that that would be good.

fwiw, I've started testing with the fusion series and have been very impress with downrange accuracy. I'm averaging 4-5" groups at 300yards of makeshift towel rest.

The 165 grain may be the best all round bullet weight if you want to use the same load for everything from deer to moose. Federal loads a 165 Nosler Partition as well as a Sierra GameKing.

Your .30-06 will do fine on Whitetail deer with just about any commercial 150-165gr bullet.

Accuracy wise I'd bet any of them will shoot under 2-3" at 100 yards out of a model 700. Which is plenty accurate for a hunter to shoot deer out to 200 yards or a bit more. Sight it in 2 1/2" high at 100 yards and you will be able to hold dead on out to almost 300 yards without having to worry about bullet drop and still be in the vitals on a whitetail deer.

I say you pick whatever is cheap and locally available, buy a bunch of it and learn to shoot your rifle well. Try various field positions, not just shooting off the bench. Learn to shoot it, sitting, standing, kneeling, leaning on a tree or post for support, ect....

You don't need a sub MOA rifle to kill deer. But, you need to be able to hit the deer, and that only comes with practice. The most accurate rifle and ammo combination in the world won't kill a deer if the hunter can't place the bullet in the right place.

In the years to come if you really do go on that big elk hunt, then worry about picking a premium bullet.

Sierra GameKing, Nosler Partition

And Federal Gold Metal MatchKing with Sierra Match King for some serious target shooting
